Our first stop was the capital Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can see the
diverse influences from Arabs, Persians, Indians and Europeans. We stayed there three wonderful
days and visiting all the old buildings, e.g., House of Wonders (former Sultans residence, built
1883), Old Fort (built 17th century by Omanis), Anglican cathedral (built end of 19th century and
former place for the biggest slave market of Zanzibar) and many more. Especially nice are the
Zanzibari carved wooden doors.
The rest of the time we spent in Uroa on the east coast. I built two antennas between the palmtrees.
One 42 meter windom from DX-wire in west-east direction and a 21 meter windom in north-south
direction 10 meter over ground. Unstable power supply affect the fun, but the conditions were great.
The Tamarind Beach Hotel is right on the beach and so it was easy to change between radio and
relaxation.
As usual, I worked in CW and RTTY. Try with PSK failed due to the discipline of radio amateurs.
I asked for RST and got name (ok), city, locator, equipment, EPC-number and a lot of other
information. Why? For a RTTY-QSO I need a minute, for PSK 5 minutes .....
Other highlights were fishing trip with a dhow and birthdayparty with our old african friends.
