GW4RWR - Amateur radio - my take on it.

Introduction:

My early exposure to amateur radio was hearing morse code eminating from my dad's bedside GEC Stargazer radiov(40m, no BFO). Of course he hadn't a clue, but indulged me by creating some exciting messages. When I was thirteen, he bought a pair of Radio Shack 49.86MHz handhelds. These were purportedly 70mW out, but looking back I think it was more like 70μW; I managed to extend their range by connecting a 12V battery in place of the PP3, and replacing its telescopic antenna with a wire dipole.

Later that year, GW3RUE joined dad's Rotary club gave a talk about amateur radio. Santa brought a brand new FRG-7. I self studied and sat the RAE in December 1981, and was licenced in 1982 at the age of fifteen. I learned morse code and the present callsign was issued seven months later. Over forty years later, and I still find it amazing how information can be transmitted by wireless.

My main interest is long distance propagation at VHF. Especially intrigued by tropospheric propagation, but you can't beat a good 2m Es opening.
