New Jersey NTS Management

The State of New Jersey is divided into two ARRL Sections, Northern NJ the Hudson Division, and Southern NJ

e Atlantic Division.

<<TRIVIA: Only three states are split across Divisions; the other two are New York (Atlantic/Hudson) and California (Pacific/Southwestern)>>

Each ARRL Section has a Traffic Manager (STM) appointed by his/her corresponding Section Manager to supervise traffic handling organization at the section level--that is, to coordinate all traffic efforts within the section, regardless of mode or National Traffic System (NTS) affiliation, so that routings within the section and connections with other networks and digital traffic nodes will result in orderly and efficient traffic flow.  New Jersey is a relatively small state in a geographic sense, and the NTS Section Nets are really dual-section nets covering the entire state.  For this reason, the STMs of NNJ and SNJ have a long and successful tradition of close co-operation to facilitate both traditional traffic flow and digital forwarding throughout all of New Jersey.

The Section Traffic Managers are:

OPERATING AIDS

Bulk Mail Common Texts - Several stations throughout the country have been originating large volumes of NTS messages.  Many of the messages go to people pulled from FCC transaction files or other organizational membership lists.  In most cases, the addressee does not know the sender personally, which can make the delivery somewhat confusing.  Some traffic handlers think this is a good thing, because it generates traffic and keeps the system oiled.  Others think it is nothing more than unwanted amateur SPAM and a pain in the neck to deliver.  In either case, these messages will continue to arrive.  To make matters a little easier, various people have compiled a set of COMMON TEXTS  for you.   You might consider keeping a copy handy in or near your message log.

ARL Numbered Radiograms - FSD-3 -  The complete list of numbered texts (PDF format).

The Pink Card - FSD-218 - has the list of QN-signals, HX instructions, Precedences, and other recommended procedures for message composing and relaying (PDF format).

Other Useful Information:

NET ACTIVITIES

Station Activity Reports - You do not have to be a League member to submit a SAR or PSHR report.  Everyone is encouraged to report so we can know how many people are active on the nets.  Reports to the STM (KB2RTZ or WB2FTX) must be received by no later than 11 PM on the 8th day of the following month.  Late reports will be sent to ARRL HQ with the next month's reports.   Sample SAR and PSHR report

Public Service Honor Roll - PSHR reporting includes ARES, NTS, and other public service activities.  Traffic handlers are encouraged to report their PSHR activity to the STM along with the SAR report.  Click on this link to learn how to count points for PSHR:   PSHR Description

Gary K2GW has developed a PSHR worksheet in Excel for keeping track of your points - makes the end of the month reporting a snap.

Official Relay Station - League members can obtain an appointment as an ORS by contacting your Section Traffic Manager.  An ORS appointee makes a commitment to participate in traffic nets and handle messages according to proper procedures.  An ORS is also expected to make a monthly Station Activity Report (SAR) to the STM in order to maintain and renew the appointment.   ORS Description     You may also aspire to become a Net Manager.   Net Manager Description

Net Manager Activity Reports - Net Managers of each of the section-level NJ traffic nets are requested to send a report of their net's activity at the end of each month to both the Northern NJ Section Traffic Manager (WB2FTX), and the Southern NJ Section Traffic Manager (KB2RTZ).  If you hold an official NM appointment, then a monthly report is required.  Managers of the VHF Local nets only need to send a report to your local STM.    There is no specific format for these reports but at a minimum they should include the following:  name of net, total number of messages listed (QTC), total number of messages passed (QSP), total number of stations checked in (QNI), total number of minutes in session (QTR), and total number of sessions held.  In addition, you may wish to send optional data such as number of different check-ins, and percent of traffic passed, and any other news events about your net.  Reports to KB2RTZ and WB2FTX must be received by no later than 11 PM on the 8th day of the following month.

Monthly STM Reports -  The Section Traffic Managers send monthly reports to ARRL HQ, containing traffic totals for each of the Section and Local Nets, as well as SAR/PSHR totals for individuals.  Click HERE to see a historical archive going back to mid-2000.  You can use this data to determine if you qualify for a PSHR certificate.

New Jersey Traffic Handler Awards -  New Jersey traffic handlers are proud to recognize outstanding members of our nets, both HF and VHF, during the year.  A nicely engraved plaque is presented to each recipient.  Read more about Awards Info.  Click here for photos of the award plaques and recipients.

New Jersey Traffic Bulletin - A library of past issues of  NJTB.  We publish a Quarterly Review of all NJ Traffic Nets activities.  Click here for the current issue.

NTS Message Handling on Packet - The NTS also has a parallel network of digital systems for traffic forwarding and you may also participate.  Click here to learn more.   Also see "Intro to NTS Packet", a PDF file by KN6PE from the California ARES/RACES community.

UP FINGER APPOINTMENTS     NEW BLINKING 11-30-16

Affiliated ARRL NTS Section and Local nets are maintained by Net Managers appointed by the Section Traffic Manager (STM). Liaisons between nets must be assigned in advance by the Net Manager or assigned ad-hoc by the Net Control Station for a particular session. Customarily liaisons are assigned by the “lower” net in the NTS structure, the exception being liaisons between parallel levels in different cycles which are assigned by mutual agreement between Net Managers.

The Official Relay Station (ORS) appointment is available for stations wishing to become regular participants in the NTS system. The ORS is expected to use best operating and engineering practices, participate in the nets on a regular basis, and report activity to their STM monthly. See the ORS requirements and the on-line application on the ARRL web page at
ORS Appointment Description.

UP FINGER. PROTOCOLS  :  NEW BLINKING 11/30/16

The Basic Traffic Handling Voice and CW tutorials (BTH) on the  (General Information section) provide protocol guidance for traffic handling. They also contain listings of the ARRL Precedences, Handling Instructions (HX codes) and the ARRL Numbered Radiograms.

Getting Started

Here is a random radiogram from our Trivia Traffic database to get you started. A new radiogram comes up every sixty seconds, so if you refresh/reload the page you'll see another trivia message here.

If you don't like this particular trivia topic, no problem. There are many others in our Trivia Traffic listings for you to choose from. But before you scroll down to the listings, much of the fun of trivia traffic is plugging the information from the trivia clue into your favorite search engine and reading a bit about the topic. That's right! You don't have to know the answer from memory to play.

Answering Trivia

Transmit your trivia answer to the originator by radiogram via the National Traffic System. Reference the message number and filing date of the trivia message in your answer. The originating station should reply by radiogram as to the correctness of your answer and may reply with additional clues if you are on the wrong track or need to be more specific.

The NTS usually wants a properly addressed radiogram, which includes mailing address and phone number. QRZ.com is a good source for address information and there are many phone databases on the Internet. The signature in the trivia traffic may contain return address information. Also, you might check the NTS operators list here on NTS Talk.

There are local traffic nets all over, some affiliated with NTS some not, but any traffic net should do. The operators on these nets are a helpful bunch and will be more than happy to help get your traffic into the system. If you simply cannot get on to a local net, try finding an NTS operator in your area and filing your radiogram with them. For information about the NTS, see the NTS question in the Q&A below.

Originating Trivia Traffic

Stations originating trivia traffic please note the following guidelines.

  • Use a generic text of some sort in the addressee block. The trivia traffic listing here uses the trivia title as an addressee. Some originating stations get fanciful with the addressee block. Addressing to a specific addressee for transmission through the NTS is discouraged as reuse of such trivia traffic by other participants may be confusing.
  • Participating stations will need to be able to contact you by radiogram. To make it easy to address traffic to you, you can place addressing information in the signature of your trivia traffic. You might also consider creating an entry in our NTS operators list here on NTS Talk and putting the information there. You might consider having answer traffic addressed for routing to the local net you operate on. In any case, be sure to provide enough information to route properly through the system.
  • Leeway on trivia answers is totally at your discretion. You should respond by radiogram as to correctness of the answer. You might consider providing progressively more revealing clues in your responses to incorrect or incomplete answers to encourage additional answer traffic.

This is an NTS training session given by Kate K6HTN. It covers, in three parts, a general overview of the National Traffic System, specifics about message format, how to voice the message when sending, and how to operate on a directed traffic net.

These videos are from an older version of the Traffic School presentation. Power point for the most up to date version of the presentation are always available at

Purchasing a DMR radio.  From the amount of people I heard on DMR repeaters and pod casts afterwards, it sounds like they were the popular item this year.  For good reason, I picked up a Tytera MD-380 for a little over $100.  It included the radio, battery, charging base, 2 antennas, programming cable, and software .

DMR LOGODMR stands for Digital Mobile Radio and is a standard published in 2005 that came from our friends in Europe.  It is an open standard (publically available for adoption and modification) and widely adopted for commercial use.  In practice manufactures have introduced proprietary features into DMR and created marketing buzzwords like MotoTRBO.  With enough surplus hardware available in the market, the price dropped low enough for hams to adopt the standard and setup DMR repeaters.  I have a lot to learn about how all this works.  There aren't DMR repeaters in range of my QTH.  Couple on the opposite side of town and to the south
