The Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) is a "no license required" radio service in the VHF business band. A list of MURS frequencies can be found here. I use MURS radios for family communications around the neighborhood.
I use a J-Pole (the one on the left) as a MURS base station antenna. The antenna on the right is a Diamond X-50A, which is my 2m/440 base station antenna.
My MURS base station radio is a Radio Shack Model 19-1210 VHF business band radio (under the Icom 706MKIIG). For portable operation I use Radio Shack BTX-127 VHF hand-helds (the two on the right).
I bought the Radio Shack radios on clearance a couple of years ago.
For car-to-car communications, I have two dedicated Radio Shack 19-1210 tranceivers, equipped with cigarette lighter power adapters and 1/4 wave mag-mount antennas. The range is several miles with 2 watts, depending on terrain of course. |
