W3VD's 40m dipole

This is a quick and dirty 40m dipole I put up for multiband operation to cover everything 40m thru 10m. It is one 1/2 wavelength on 40m and is fed with 40ft of 450 ohm ladder line. It is 70ft high and supported by two very tall sycamore trees. The end insulators are barely visible in this image. I used an air cannon to launch a tennis ball pulling fishing line for getting the antenna rope in the trees.

The feed point consists of a ceramic insulator and some tie wraps to provide strain relief.

The ladder line goes to a 1:1 current choke balun, aka "The Ugly Balun". The coax is RG213 and is soldered directly to the ladder line. I used black silicone sealent to keep water out of the coax.

The so-called Ugly Balun

I used a leather punch to make holes in the ladder line for a strain relief.

The other end of the coax from the balun comes in thru the window into the attic where I have a LDG Z11 ProII automatic tuner. The output of the tuner goes to coax which runs into the ham shack on the second floor. I've been able to tune up 80m, 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, 10m, and 6m bands with this setup.

Disclaimer: No, the antenna is not grounded, get over it. I disconnect all of my equipment when not in use, or if a storm is on its way. A sane person obviously would provide adequate ground protection, don't do as I do. If your house burns down do not blame it on W3VD.
