This is Norma and Bob. We met in the late 1930's,
Both of us attended Garfield High School in East Los Angeles and were
married in 1940. I joined the Navy in September 1942, Our daughter Iris was
born in October. I became a radio man and was transferred to Mare Island
Transmitter Station NPG. Housing was furnished and Norma and 8 Mo.
old Iris moved in. This good duty lasted 9 Months. Family went home to
Norma's Mother and I went to Sea as Radio man 1st class doing duty
with Commander Transport Squadron 17 aboard the APA 38 USS Chilton.
The Squadron participated in landings at Leyte in the Philippines.
through Okinawa and landings of occupation troops in Korea and some
extra duty in China. Finally getting discharged December 1945.
I could not get the code out of my system. Norma bought me a Hallicrafter
S38 receiver, I got my ham ticket in 1947 . We had incentive licensing then.
First year as Class B, CW only below 10 mtrs. To advance up to Class A ,
required sending and receiving CW 13 wpm...That was it... from CW to AM to
SSB. In 1951 I got on RTTY with a complete setup model 19 RTTY machine and
14 years ago with a Commodore 64 and on Amtor and then Pactor.
