I was drafted in March, 1966 and was living in Brooklyn, New York at the time. I took the subway to the Whitehall induction station which was in Manhattan(NYC). The group that I was assigned was taken by train to Fort Jackson, SC (reception center). Basic was at Fort Gordon, Georgia. AIT was truck driving school (MOS:64A10) for 2 months. Our entire class of all RA & US guys were taken with 2 busses to Fort Meade, MD (July, 1966). We were the initial portion of the 566th Trans.Co.- Medium Truck Cargo. Within several days additional men arrived and we started orientation & training. MOS: 64B20. After a few months we prepared our tractors and trailers for shipment. In the beginning of Dec. 1966 the company flew from Baltimore, Maryland to California and boarded a troop ship @ the Oakland Army Terminal. After 21 days @ sea we arrived @ Vung Tau, Vietnam. Everyone disembarked except our company and a light truck company. Next day we arrived @ Cam Ranh Bay. In Feb. 1967 our platoon in the 566th was switched with one from the 585th. Reason was so an entire company would not rotate at the same time. In May, 1967 the 585th Trans. Co. was moved to Qui Nhon. The usual locations to drive to were An Khe, Pleiku, Phu Cat, Bong Son. In Dec.1967, after 12 months in Vietnam I finally completed my tour. Flew to Fort Lewis, Washington for separation - 22Dec67. Then to JFK airport(NY), home.
In 1968 I became a police officer for the New York City Police Department and after 23 years I retired in
1991. After retiring from that career I immediately began another working for a university as a security
officer, where I am currently working. I am married since 1972 and have two daughters, 32 & 29 years.
