This is the scene of a long abandoned old state highway, but a bridge
that still stands as part of a section called Crane Lane, although
the road basically dead ends at the bridge. The bridge is a
beautiful example of the way they were built in Texas for the first
paved highways, probably in the 1930s sometime. The aerial
from MSRmaps.com is
from 1995 and shows the old state highway very well. Most of it is gone
now, as 183 has been divided into four lanes and a toll road from Austin
passes through this section. Fortunately, the bridge and a small piece
of history, do remain. And, I would say, one of the most beautiful
examples of early bridges in Texas.
