Hempstead Road at Brittmore Road:
Most of us have traveled the Northwest Freeway, U.S. 290, for quite a few years now. About 1976, the 290 service roads were built in the Jersey Village area. Prior to that, Hempstead Road served as the official route for U.S. 290. Some of you may remember how long it took to get out of Houston with at least a dozen traffic lights along the route. And, if there was a train, the lights blinked red until the train passed. The first photo shows an abandoned section of Hempstead Road looking into the existing old road. The second shows how the old road would have lined up with the 290 service road. If anyone has more information about this abandoned street, please e-mail the webmaster.
