There is quite a bit of abandoned U.S. 59 near/in three small towns
between Rosenberg and Wharton. When the highway was upgraded in the
1970s from two-lane blacktop to four-lane divided, the towns of Beasley,
Kendleton and Hungerford were bypassed. At first, the bypasses were
simply divided highways with crossovers and intersections. Recently, all
three were upgraded to have overpasses and service roads. Part of this
probably has to do with this section being designated as future
Interstate 69. However, not all of U.S. 59 is freeway. Many sections
still exist as two-lane divided and in fact, some people may not realize
it but part of U.S. 59 is actually the old road and only 1/2 of the main
lanes. Look closely at the gap and you'll see that there is plenty of
room to build the other main lane section. Here is a look at the first
