Abandoned highways and bridges of Texas

Abandoned U.S. 59 near Hungerford

There is quite a bit of abandoned U.S. 59 near/in three small towns between Rosenberg and Wharton. When the highway was upgraded in the 1970s from two-lane blacktop to four-lane divided, the towns of Beasley, Kendleton and Hungerford were bypassed. At first, the bypasses were simply divided highways with crossovers and intersections. Recently, all three were upgraded to have overpasses and service roads. Part of this probably has to do with this section being designated as future Interstate 69. However, not all of U.S. 59 is freeway. Many sections still exist as two-lane divided and in fact, some people may not realize it but part of U.S. 59 is actually the old road and only 1/2 of the main lanes. Look closely at the gap and you'll see that there is plenty of room to build the other main lane section. Here is a look at the first of the three towns. All three pretty much look the same and you'll have to look close to see how they differ. Here is a look at abandoned U.S. 59 in Hungerford.
