Abandoned highways and bridges of Texas

State Highway 249 (formerly FM 149) near Tomball

I took photos of the abandoned highway as it is being upgraded to a tollway, although very slowly. Nothing is toll, yet, and the part of 249 north of the existing freeway is divided highway except for one bridge at FM 2920 in Tomball. SH 249 will be upgraded to a freeway and plans are to have a freeway all the way to Navasota, although the route is not certain. In the meantime, enjoy these photos of the old road. (Note the last photo is farther north, in Pinehurst, where the road was widened, but there is very little visible of the old road in the middle. You'll have to look hard to see anything) Just a side note = this abandoned highway looks like it could have remained in place and then all that would have been needed was service roads and overpasses. However, plans call for complete reconstruction. In my opinion, the old road didn't really look all that bad, but there are reasons for replacements.
