Siquijor

Depending on whom you ask, Siquijor is overrun with voodoo, witches, vampires -- or if you're lucky, all of the above. The island has a mystical reputation way beyond its relatively small size. The tiniest of the Visayas provinces, Siquijor can easily be seen in only a day or two, but nicer if you have more time to visit and can take the time to relax and savor is beauty.

---------------------------------------

There is no airport on Siquijor; access is only by boats. I flew to Dumaguete and took the fast ferry from there, trying to maximize the distance I could cover by air and minimize the time spent on boats. Here, the island of Negros recedes from view as my Weesam Express passenger ferry makes the 1-hour crossing to Siquijor

From the dock as we approached, Siquijor looked like something out of a travel magazine.

---------------------------------------

I stayed up in the northeastern part of the island at the Kiwi Dive Resort. Very simple cottages could be had for $12 a night. Not much inside, but at least mosquito nets were provided to help make the nights bug free.

---------------------------------------

A couple shots from the beach at Kiwi. Needless to say, with views like this I spent more time outside than inside!

---------------------------------------

I spent a total of two days on top of a motorcycle exploring the island. Whether hugging the coastal road or veering into the island's interior, great views and great photographs were easy to obtain.

---------------------------------------

Siquijor "traffic", such as it is.
Most times I was the only vehicle on the road. Occasionally I would have to pass another motorcycle or tricycle.

---------------------------------------

Saw this dance troupe walking along the side of the road on the southwestern coast. I was going much to fast to stop suddenly, but I couldn't help but circle back around for a slower approach and ask if they wouldn't mind if I took their pictures. They were delighted to pose for me.

---------------------------------------

Most of the island's nicer resorts are in the southwest. I stopped at the Coral Cay Resort for a drink, then moved down the coast to the Coco Grove Resort for a nice kinilaw lunch. Nice views of Apo Island and Mindanao on the horizon from this part of Siquijor.
