When the grid goes down and cell towers are off the air, Ham Radio can still function. Messages and reports can be passed at relatively high-speed using digital modes. We would like everyone who is a member of ARAST to be aware of our Digital Training Net. You can participate in the class or just learn more by observing.

VARAC is free software that makes possible 100% error-free keyboard-to-keyboard communication, which can include ad-hoc messages or files, including pictures. The EmComm capabilities were introduced in 2024, and are an extension of features that were already in VARAC

To enable VARAC, you must have downloaded VARA from https://rosmodem.wordpress.com/

as well as VARAC from https://www.varac-hamradio.com/ .

The net on Tuesday will not focus on the installation process, but will be a live demonstration of the features. If you would like help installing the software either before or after the training net, please reply to this email. So, no advance preparation is required. This page also includes a link for a pdf that can be downloaded that gives further details. The demonstration will be on HF, but VARA and VARAC can also be used on VHF and UHF FM. However, we have not yet fully tried this out. We hope to do that in the future. Thanks, Reiner N2PEZ
