things.
Have you heard of SOTA? Summits on the Air is an
award scheme for radio amateurs and shortwave listeners that encourages
portable operation in mountainous areas. Participants, known as
“activators,” operate from designated summits, while
“chasers” attempt to make contact with them from other
locations. The goal is to promote activity on the amateur radio bands and
to encourage the exploration of the great outdoors.
After the business meeting, we have an exciting
presentation on SOTA lined up! Nick WN2G will be sharing his experiences.
He will discuss how he got started and how his approach may have evolved
over the years. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from Nick’s
journey and gain insights into this fascinating aspect of amateur radio.
Everyone is welcome to attend, as BARA meetings are
open to all. The only prerequisite for attending is an interest in
Amateur Radio. In addition, you will have the opportunity to meet other ham
radio operators in your area and learn from their experiences as well.

the Meeting via Zoom.

Equipment Auction at Our September Meeting

Wednesday, September 18 at Kopernik Observatory and Science
Center
Our annual equipment auction, held at our September
meeting, was a resounding success. Club members had the opportunity to bid
on a wide variety of quality used amateur radio gear, providing the perfect
chance to upgrade their setups or find that specific piece of equipment
they had been searching for. This event not only allowed members to enhance
their radio setups but also helped us clear out a significant amount of
equipment that was just taking up space in the club’s shack.
More importantly, the auction ensured that this
equipment found its way into the hands of our active members who will put
it to good use, turning the meeting into a fun and engaging event for
everyone involved. Additionally, our treasurer reported that we raised
several hundred dollars for the club. We want to extend our heartfelt
thanks to all those who donated equipment. Your generosity is greatly
appreciated, and rest assured, the proceeds would be put to good use in
supporting our club’s activities and the broader amateur radio
community.
Doug's Fish Fry Fundraiser at Tractor Supply
Company

Thursday,
September 19 at Tractor Supply Company in Vestal, NY
Our Doug’s Fish Fry fundraiser was well
attended as many members and friends come out to support the club and enjoy
some delicious seafood. The event featured a variety of seafood options
prepared fresh on-site, including Doug’s famous fried haddock,
shrimp, scallops, and their special Thursday offering of onion rings. This
fundraiser provided an excellent opportunity for our club to raise funds
while engaging with the local community.
Amateur Radio Special Event Station K2ZRO

Saturday, September 21 at Kopernik Observatory and Science
Center
For half a century, Kopernik has been a guiding light
in astronomical exploration. As part of Kopernik's Gala celebration, we
operated Amateur Radio Special Event Station K2ZRO. Participants had the
chance to explore the fascinating world of amateur radio communication with
the Binghamton Amateur Radio Association (BARA), which proudly calls
Kopernik home. Our 50th Anniversary celebration was not just a look back at
our rich history but also a vibrant event that engaged the community and
highlighted the ongoing importance of astronomical exploration.
