Binghamton Amateur Radio Association – October 2025

North American QRP CW Club
If you enjoy the challenge and charm of low-power Morse code operating, consider joining the North American QRP CW Club (NAQCC). This friendly organization is dedicated to promoting CW at QRP levels and offers a variety of ways to get involved, including monthly operating challenges, sprints, and a free newsletter full of tips and member stories. Membership is free, and the club welcomes operators of all skill levels who share a love for doing more with less.

Volunteer Exam (VE) Test Session
Wednesday, October 15, 2025
  6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Kopernik Observatory, 698 Underwood Rd, Vestal, NY

Held one hour before our monthly member meetings, our VE Test Sessions are an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to earn their amateur radio license or upgrade their existing privileges. Walk-ins are allowed.

Amateur radio license exams are still being held though a temporary government shutdown has delayed new license processing by the FCC. Volunteer Examiners (VEs) are still conducting exams, but candidates may need to take a temporary workaround for the FCC Registration Number (FRN) requirement and wait to receive their official license until the FCC systems are back online.

While our exams are free, the FCC charges a $35 fee for new licenses, renewals, and vanity call sign requests.
This fee is not handled at the VE session, it is paid directly to the FCC. Once you have successfully completed your test, you will receive an email with detailed instructions from the FCC once your application is processed.

BARA Monthly Club Meeting
Wednesday, October 15, 2025
  7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Kopernik Observatory, 698 Underwood Rd, Vestal, NY

The sky’s the limit as we welcome John Ceccherelli, N2XE, who will provide a presentation about Lockheed Martin’s Blue Horizon flights, a bold initiative that blends technical innovation, public outreach, and environmental awareness in the spirit of amateur radio.

This project explores the use of high-altitude balloon platforms to carry lightweight amateur radio payloads into the stratosphere, enabling long-distance communication, telemetry experiments, and exciting STEM education opportunities. John will share insights into the project’s goals, design challenges, and launch plans.

Whether you’re a seasoned operator or simply curious about near-space experimentation, this is a presentation you won’t want to miss. Bring your questions, your ideas, and your own blue-sky thinking!

Radio and the Disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan
Thursday, October 16, 2025, at  7:00 pm on Zoom

On July 3, 1937, Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan vanished during their second attempt at a round-the-world flight. Radio played a pivotal role in the search and in the many theories that followed. Decades later, multiple organizations have invested millions of dollars in attempts to solve the mystery and locate the remains of Earhart, Noonan, and their Lockheed Electra 10E. Brian will share the latest findings, bringing both his technical background and passion for radio history to the discussion.

QCWA Member Brian Harrison, KN4R, will present "Radio and the Disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan.". Brian has been an amateur radio operator since 1968 and has held a lifelong interest in radio history since the mid-1970s. He earned a BET from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and spent his early career in process control for the commercial photography industry. Most of his career in the personal computer field, with over 25 years at Apple Computer in service training, technical sales support, and Macintosh support for Compass Group.
