Erie Canal Bicentennial Celebration (POTA)
Tuesday, September 16 to Thursday, September 25th, 2025

As part of New York State’s Erie Canal Bicentennial, amateur radio operators are activating Parks on the Air (POTA) sites along the historic canal corridor to celebrate 200 years of engineering, community, and innovation. These portable ops events offer a unique opportunity to combine historical appreciation with public outreach and ham radio fun. The kickoff takes place this weekend in Watkins Glen, where operators will set up near the waterfront and state park to commemorate the southern gateway to canal country. Expect special event call signs, custom QSL cards, and plenty of opportunities to make contacts while sharing our hobby with the public. Following Watkins Glen, activations are planned in the Adirondacks, Erie Canal and the Niagara Peninsula. Each location offers its own blend of canal history and community celebration, making these events a great way to engage with the public, log contacts, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow operators. If you’re interested in joining an activation or helping coordinate a club presence, let us know. Whether you operate, log, or simply stop by to support, these events promise to be a memorable part of the bicentennial festivities. For more information, contact Steve KA2YRA.

Wednesday, September 17, 2025
  6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Kopernik Observatory, 698 Underwood Rd, Vestal, NY

Held one hour before our monthly member meetings, our VE Test Sessions are an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to earn their amateur radio license or upgrade their existing privileges. Walk-ins are allowed.

While our exams are free, the FCC charges a $35 fee for new licenses, renewals, and vanity call sign requests.

BARA Monthly Club Meeting
Wednesday, September 17, 2025
  7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Kopernik Observatory, 698 Underwood Rd, Vestal, NY

We are excited to announce that Joe Long, WA2EJT, will be our guest speaker at this month's meeting. Joe will be giving a presentation on vintage radios, a subject he's both passionate about and highly experienced in.

Joe has been a frequent contributor to ham radio magazines for decades, including 73 and Electric Radio. His most recent article was published in Electronic Radio magazine. A lifelong enthusiast of vintage military transmitters and receivers, Joe also has a deep appreciation for some of the best tube-type rigs ever built.

Like many hams of his generation, Joe was an early adopter of computers and programming. His technical knowledge not only advanced his professional career but also enriched his amateur radio journey. This promises to be a highly engaging and informative session, blending technical depth with personal insights and field-tested experience. Whether you are a seasoned operator or new to the hobby, you will find something valuable.

All are welcome, if you have an interest in amateur radio; we invite you to join us! It is a great opportunity to connect with fellow enthusiasts, share knowledge, and enjoy the camaraderie of the hobby.
