A breakdown of the process and fees for taking a volunteer exam to obtain an amateur radio license:
87
88
Volunteer Exam Coordinator (VEC) Fee: If you're taking your exam through the Laurel VEC at the Vestal Fire Station or the Kopernik Observatory, there is no fee for the exam session. Other VECs may charge a fee. For example, the ARRL VEC (one of the largest coordinators) charges $15 per exam session.
89
90
Before the Exam:
91
You'll need to register for an FCC Registration Number (FRN) through the FCC's CORES system. This number is required for all license applications.
92
93
At the Exam:
94
Bring a valid photo ID and your FRN. Since there's no session fee with the Laurel VEC, there's no need to bring payment for the exam.
95
Please include a valid email address with your application so the FCC can notify you (see below)
96
97
After the Exam:
98
Once you pass your exam, the Laurel VEC will submit your application to the FCC.
99
The FCC will email you instructions to pay the $35 application fee before they will issue your license. You'll need to complete this step within 10 calendar days.
100
101
How to Pay
102
FCC Fee: This can be paid online through the FCC's CORES system. The email from the FCC will provide a direct link and detailed instructions.
103
104
When You'll Find Out
105
After passing the exam and paying the FCC fee, your new license is typically issued within a few business days. You can check the FCC's Universal Licensing System (ULS) to confirm when your license is active.
