Radio Trek: The Next Generation
The Technician Class accounts for half of amateur radio licensees. What can clubs do to engage them in club activities? One way is to expose them to an on-the-air activity that includes a club-focus. People get excited and energized when they are a contributor to a bigger common-vision.
Technicians have a taste of HF SSB privileges on the 10 meter band. Leverage it to energize them and get them more involved in the club as a contributor to a team effort. One easy way is through radio sports.
Most clubs have someone who is interested in radio sports. Find them and ask them to lead a club activity for the upcoming NY QSO party (NYQP.org). It runs for only 12-hours, from October 17, 2026, from 14:00 UTC through 01:59 UTC (10:00 AM Eastern Time through 9:59 PM Eastern Time).

It is where the world looks specifically for New York operators! Encourage all club members to activate, and target Technicians with 10-meter radios and antennas or those willing to take a loan of a radio and have a dipole raising event at their home. Make it a club activity that Technicians can be part of and build their pride in your club.
Be ready for other questions like, “Do I have to log?”, “How do I log?”, “How do I submit the log?”, “How do I apply for the Rookie/Low Power category?”, “How do I make sure my log counts toward my club?”, etc.
It’s also ok to get them on the band and active without submitting a log; just the exposure can energize them for next year!
Already Planning for 2027
