From: [email protected] (RICHARD S. FISHER) Date: Wed, 19 Mar 1997 12:49:22 EST Hi Dave, I guess you came to Saudi just after I left and Bill was still there-W9ERG that is. I do not have internet access so I don't know what's on your page. My call when I was in Saudi was W4TST but my original call was W9FJL andhave held K8VLH, W8GAP and VK4FFA over the years and now W8AM for the last 21 years. Still have some pictures of HZ1AB as I knew it - most black and white but some in color. When I left we had a BC-610, a Collins receiver - the onethat covered broadcast band through 30mhz in 30 bands each band 1mhz wide I think an R-390-URR. (probably either a 51J. I remember a 75A2 being in the shack...Dave) We also had a World Radio Labs (Globe King)400 watt rig. We had a Gordon 3 element wide spaced 20 meter beam interlaced with a 4 element 10 meter beam on a 60 foot pole.
When I got there and during most of my stay I was the only licensed ham on the base. I do not know how long the station had been off the air but did get the WRL while I was there and got the General to put up the 20-10 meter beam and install the pole to support it. The beam was there, but wasn't put up. I also got the AFRS station on the air. They had a 25 watt rig on 1010 on the broadcast band but a great console and tape decks etc. The Gates which ran 500 watts was in packing crates when I arrived and I got it on the air. Got the General to put up three 60 foot poles and put up a dipole cut for 1010 kc. on these poles. Needless to say we were heard all over the area because there wasn't a broadcast station within 2000 miles. I could tell a couple of neat anecdotes about contacts while I was there such as working the Bahrain Islands cross band. I was on 1010 on the BC band and he was on 20 meters. He could't hear me on 20 but could hear us great on the BC band. Enough for now. 73's Scottie Richard S. Fisher Amateur Radio Station W8AM 2529 Concordgreen Dr. Cincinnati, Oh. 45244
