Switchback turn signals for the 2012 - 2017 GL1800

Switchbacks are LED lights that normally illuminate as a white 5000k light. When a turn signal is initated, the white LEDS shut off and amber ones turn on in sync with the turn signal. Making the change is really as simple as swapping the lamps out and changing the amber turn signal lenses out for clear ones. The grief comes in when replacing the turn signal relay. To prevent Hyper-Flashing, the OEM turn signal relay needs to be changed out to a LED friendly one. The "LED" relay I used will work with incandescent bulbs too. My guess is that most will also.

Access the relay by removing the front dash speaker cover. Hint here is that the tweeter connector's release is on the inside edge of the connector that you can't see! Squeeze and it pops off. Turn the handlebars to the right, get down on your knees and with a good flashlight look up and to the left. The rubber "tab" that holds the relay is the key to finding it. I had to unbolt the speedo dash an prop it up allowing both hands access to press the release tab and hold the harness.

The LED relay was under $8 on Amazon. I made the connecting cable myself. If you want to purchase a ready made cable and relay, the cost is between $20 and $30 depending on the vendor. IMHO the relays are all the same. The connector for the 2nd gen GL1800 is a 3 pin 2.8mm male. Kits of connectors that can be found on ebay or Amazon under $15. The adapter cables that are available use two connectors, one for the 1st gen GL1800 and one for the 2nd Gen. I didn't want to leave an unused connector dangling...

I purchased my LEDs from Amazon. I have had good luck with the iBrightstar brand in three other bikes. 7443 LEDs were $22 for the pair. The clear lenses were purchased from Ebay for about $18. Searching the term "Clear front turn signal lights lens shell fit for Honda Goldwing GL1800" will net more than a few sellers. Mine didn't come with the foam seals along the outside edges. I used a small bead of GE clear silicone in its place. Home Depot or Lowes has 3/8" adheasive backed weather stripping that might do the same thing..

Another hint is to check the LED operation before re-assembly. If by chance, the bulb lights very dim, pull it back out and straighten the "wires" or "leads" so that they more resemble the OEM bulb that you took out. Sometimes a lead misses the right spot.

The clear lenses drop in place of the OEM amber ones.
Accessing the lens starts with removing the philips head screw under the turn signal housing. Then removing the three screws holding it to the mount. The OEM lamp is easily replaced with the LED. The extra wires are for Muth mirrors.
The lens and cover are free once the three screws are out.
Just slide the OEM out and the clear lens in.
Left side finished.
