VirtualBox Error, Win. 10 VM crash BY THOMAS BROOKS, KG5ZSU July, 2022 ============================================ I’ve had my Win. 10 VM crash (abort) on startup several times now, at random, and in the process it made my host (Debian 11) hang. Not very nice. Especially since the only log info in VB was something about an RTC offset and catch-up failures. I couldn’t find anything about crashes related to this online either. I tried every combination of VM configs I could think of—after getting the idea from several forum threads—and nothing worked. Then I thought about the needrestart package. Each time I remember the VM crashing, my host said “restart to install updates.” Apparently the never-needs-a-restart mentality in Linux isn’t always a good thing…. I rebooted the host, and the VM started with no trouble. It seems some dependency for VirtualBox got updated, and because I didn’t do the update manually, I could check the output of needrestart. Let this be a reminder to all Linux users: sometimes a restart solves those “odd” problems that just don’t make sense.
