Yaesu FT65r

The FT65r is for lack of a better term, a "betterer" Chinesium radio. The menu system screams Beofung but the overall feel says Yaesu. The speaker microphone has a Motorola "M1" type connector. The only other Yeasu that uses it is the FT25r. The mic shouldn't cost 40 to 50 % of the cost of the radio! The OEM programming cable is up there too. Yaesu offers free programming software that will do the job but it might frustrate you in the process. There is help though. Below are a few suggestions on how to save a few bucks and get to play radio with a smile.

The speaker mic is SSM-17B. It's the same as what the Motorola CP200 uses. The P/N for the Moto speaker mic is PMMN4013A. As of March 2024 Amazon has one for under $20.

Seek and Ye shall find.

The programming cable is SCU-35. To home brew your own you need a "USB to TTL" board, a 2.5mm "TRS" connector and a few feet of shieded wire. I used balanced audio cable. It has two conductors and a ground. Use the Red wire and the shield. The last thing is a 1N914 or a 1N4148 diode.
The black header on the converter board can be unsoldered and the wires connected directly to the board.
