MINUTES OF LIDXA INC. MEETING—March 16, 2001

Location: Polytechnic University, Farmingdale, N.Y.

The LIDXA President, Marty, NN2C, called the meeting of March 16 to order at 8:20 PM.  Marty welcomed guest and ex-LIDXA member Hank, W2HAP to this meeting, along with the XYLs of members N2JE and N2DXJ.  Members present (per sign-in on the blackboard) included K2MFY, NN2C, N2JE, N2DXJ, N2QW, N2NB, W2VZQ, W2FGD, and N2KA.

Marty was disappointed at the low membership turnout at this meeting.  According to the club’s constitution, since a quorum of the LIDXA membership were not present (one-third of the present membership or more than twelve members), no business matters could be transacted tonight.

In terms of DX, specific activities mentioned:

·         A Russian station, A52CO, has been very active on the HF bands, mostly on CW.  He is expected to be there until after the Russian contest, held over the weekend of March 17–18.  Several members reported excellent openings to Bhutan and Nepal around 8AM local time on ten meters.

·         Several forthcoming DXpeditions were reported; namely, Lord Howe Island scheduled for late March; HK3JJH/Ø to Malpelo Island in the first week of April followed by HK5MQZ/Ø and HK5QGX/Ø on CW between April 10 through 21; and Agalega Island scheduled for late April.

·         Veteran DXers F2CW and JA1BK will be visiting Pictairn Island during the mid-March.  They are looking into activating Ducie Island in the future with a possibility of applying for new DXCC status.

·         There may be a new DXpedition to Comoros Island in the future.  With the D68C group making over 160,000 QSOs it is uncertain if there is still need for present activity from this country.

·         The VKØMM QSLs from Macquarie Island have been arriving, via the manager VK4AAR.

·         Bernie, W3UR, has now taken over publishing the weekly 59(9) DX report from WB2YQH.

OLD BUSINESS

The minutes of the February 15 meeting were prepared in advance by the LIDXA Secretary, Ed, K2MFY, and included in this month’s mailing to the membership.  However they could not be accepted tonight since a quorum of members were not present.  In addition, thanks to the efforts of LIDXA Vice President, Pat, KE2LJ, these unofficial minutes also appear in the LIDXA Web site: http://www.qsl.net/lidxa.

Marty commented that there was no new information concerning the Millennium Tower Corporation’s application for a tower construction permit with the Town of Babylon.  In the meantime the LIDXA has use of the Grumman repeater, on 146.745 MHz.

NEW BUSINESS

Hank, W2HAP, a very active ex-member of the LIDXA read off a list of ham equipment that he would like to sell.  He urged all interested parties to contact him at home, at 631-367-9022, for further details and to set an appointment to view the equipment.

Several club members indicated that they will be attending the annual Dayton HamVention in mid-May.  Details concerning this convention would be announced at the next meeting.

Ed, K2MFY, mentioned that he recently contacted VU2PCD, and that at the end of the QSO he was told to go to the operator’s Web site for an electronic QSL card, or “e-QSL.”  A few hours later, Ed found a beautiful multi-color QSL sent to him from VU2PCD via the Internet.  Ed passed around the card, which was printed out on standard 8-½ ´ 11-inch  paper.  In this regards Marty mentioned that he came across a Web site at www.eqsl.cc/qslcard/ which acts as a bureau to forward and receive incoming “e-QSL” cards.  Marty said he found there were several incoming cards for him.

Marty also seemed pleased with the QSL printing services of Octavia Company, Ltd. in Maykop, Russia.  They have a very detailed Web site at www.octavia.com/qslprint.htm.  He said he recently ordered a number of multi-colored QSL cards from them.

The scheduled video on the Bhutan A52A DXpedition was shown.  This excellent video not only portrayed the ham radio aspects of this trip, but also presented a remarkable travelogue on this remote country.

This “unofficial” meeting concluded at concluded at 10:00 PM.  Marty hoped that all members would attend the next scheduled meeting on April 20.
