30 METER VERTICAL
The 30 meter vertical is an 0.25 l element made of segmented aluminium poles to give the correct length. It uses a sigma 0.5 l on (27 Mhz CB) this gives me about 17 feet of aluminium and I found a piece of 7 ft 1.25 diameter aluminium pole which made the length up to 24 feet. Since I was looking for a length of 23 feet 1 inch ( 7.04 meters ) to be resonated on 10.125 Mhz I took out the loading coil in the plastic base and joined the center of the SO239 socket to tag which joined to the brass slug which is in the black top cap. I used the original frame of sigma. I had to increase the diameter of the black plastic insulators to make 1.25 " inches diameter aluminium pole.
I use PSK and RTTY on this band. The thirty meter band has some of the characteristics of the 20 meter band and some other characteristics of the 40 meter band. The thirty meter band is unique because it shares the characteristics of both daytime and night time bands D-Layer absorption is not a significant factor.
Communications up to three thousand KM (19000 mi ) is typical during the day time and this extends half way around the world via all darkness paths the band is generally open via F2 on a 24 hour basis. But during a sun spot minimum the MUF on some DX paths may drop below 10 MHz at night .Under these conditions thirty meters adopts the characteristics of the day time band at 14MHz and higher . The thirty meter band shows these variations in the conditions over the 11 year cycle thus making it generally useful for long distance communications anytime, any place, anywhere.
