DMR Networks

So,  you want to travel outside your local DMR repeater area and talk back home on other repeaters where you are going. Maybe a short vacation or road trip, but you ask, how do I do it?

Well, first you need to understand that each DMR repeater is connected to a network such as Brandmeister,  DMR-M.A.R.C or Lonestar. But that’s not all, some places have their own DMR network and its just for their area. Also, each network has its own set of talk groups that work within their network and will not necessarily cross over to other networks.

A good example would be “Rocky Mountain Ham” or RMHAM for short. They have an amazing extensive system but it is mostly for their area and generally do not allow Talk Groups outside their network. You can read about them by clicking here: RMHAM

So before you jet off, the first thing to be aware of is if you want to talk back home on your trip, check to see what network you are on in your home area and see if it is the same where you plan to go. If it is the same, then simply program that repeater into your radio and choose a talk group to use with your friends back home.

I.E

Here in bell County we have the two networks, Lonestar and Brandmeister. If you travel to Georgia, you could use USA TG– 3100 TS1 because that’s on the Brandmeister network and talk back home. If you are  in Dallas or almost anywhere in Tx, you can use Texas wide TG-3148 TS-2 to talk back to the Troy repeater using Lonestar network.

Talk Group 9000 TS-1 on the Troy Repeater, links to DMR-MARC / Brandmeister Tx State Wide also.

So there are many ways to “talk back home” when on a trip in Texas or around the USA. Just remember to Plan out your communications and program your radio. Take your laptop and cable just incase you need to make changes.

NOTE:

TYT MD-9600 Mobile and CS-800/D with latest firmware lets you program the radio from the front panel. NO computer required!

If it is not the same network you use at home, then check to see if they bridge any talk groups from their network to the one you use at home.

The best way to do this is contact the club that supports their DMR and ask if they have any Talk Groups linked to Brandmeister. If not, would they be willing to add a BM TG to their system for the time your in that area.

If you just simply want to talk on their DRM system and not necessarily talk back to home, then find the programming info on their repeater site, program your DMR as they require and have fun!

If this has truly bent your noodle, please feel free to call of Email and I will try my best to help.

Examples given here are assuming you are in the Bell County area, although they apply all over.
