Globescout 65A Restoration.

This is a Globescout 65A from 1955, this is a crystal operated Novice rig that will do CW and AM Phone. This is pre restoration condition.

The rig was all original, and was in desperate need of a Capacitor change. I have replaced the capacitors and found that the rectifier tube is bad.

This is after the capacitors were changed, and the filaments were fired up for the first time. I am getting 680v ac out of the power transformer, and only 2.4v dc out of the rectifier tube. So I need to replace the 5U4G and go from their.

Here is after a good cleaning, the case and chassis was cleaned with warm water and dish soap. I also used some carnauba wax on the front panel to bring out a little shine and to protect the finish.

This is the under chassis after the capacitor replacement. I had to add a couple of Terminal strips to support the series capacitors that replaced the can capacitor on the chassis. Of course I opted to leave the can capacitor in place.

This was a Carrier test into a dummy load, upon initial testing I found the final tube was not working correctly. The final had been replaced with a 6146B instead of an original 6146, or equivalent 6146A. I have since replaced the tube with a 6146A.

This is a very hard to find Amphenol single pin Mic connector. They can be found on ebay and various sources around the internet. Upon doing some research I found the company Switchcraft is making them now, and can be picked up through several national electronics suppliers like mouser and Newark.

And of course it needs some rocks to get this thing to work!

First attempt to get this thing on the air, May 15, 2012. It was an unsuccessful day, since the bands were in rough shape and storms were rolling in I was only attempting contacts for about half an hour. I will try again on another day.
