KQ7L-THE HAM OPERATOR

After threatening to do so for many years, I have successfully taken the plunge and finished my upgrade to Amateur Extra and now I have a new callsign! I spent about a month studying the Gordon West book that I picked up at Radio Shack and utilized the web sites of W1AGG and AA9PW. (Thank you Peter and Simon!) These web pages allow you to take practice exams on the web and see where you need to spend more time studying. This turned out to be very helpful and they really build your confidence so the test itself isn't so intimidating! Now that I have successfully negotiated the vanity callsign system, I can also recommend the Vanity Callsign Headquarters if you have any interest in changing your callsign. Any questions you may have will be answered at this site.

KQ7L-THE AIRLINE PILOT

2000 has now come and gone! Last year, I changed careers after 24 years in broadcasting and for the past several months, I've been flying cargo planes in Montana for a company called Ameriflight. This has provided valuable experience for me...but it's now time to move on! I have just been hired as a pilot for the Number 1 regional airline in the country, SKYWEST AIRLINES!!! It looks I'll start training late this spring. For now, I'm enjoying some time off and taking care of projects around here that have been ignored for the past year. Even when I get flying again, my new job will hopefully provide me with enough time off to enjoy all my toys like my sailboat, my motorcycle, my guitar, and get BACK ON THE AIR more often!!!!

KQ7L-THE BOAT CAPTAIN

I am the proud owner of a 36-foot, steel hulled, ocean capable sailboat called the OCEAN ALLIANCE. I have spent the middle of February doing routine maintenance and painting the bottom. Now she's ready to sail again! As I have described in the past, I have email capability onboard using my Icom 706 and a KamPlus TNC and the world of Winlink 2000. It's really handy. Many changes have occured recently in the "Winlink" system making it much more user friendly. If you have any interest in Winlink 2000 or the methods used, check out the web site of K4CJX. I used this page and several of the links to put my station together and it worked the first time I tried it! Also, thanks to K5RL for the article he wrote in OCEAN NAVIGATOR for the initial inspiration.
