On December 23, 1897 when John Tavender was 24, he first married Martha FINLEY, F, daughter of Samuel FINLEY, M (1852-1921) & Icyfenie SWIFT, F (1849-1927), in Butler County, Kentucky. Born on May 3, 1876. Martha died on April 29, 1942; she was 65. They were divorced in February 1941.

They had the following children:
i. Perley, F. Born in 1898. Perley died in 1958; she was 60.
ii. Earley, M. Born in 1900. Earley died in 1930; he was 30.
iii. Ollie, M. Born on November 10, 1902. Ollie died on March 25, 1935; he was 32. Buried in Hazelwood Cemetery, Grayson Co., KY.
On November 12, 1924 when Ollie was 22, he married Thelma CLARK, F. Born on February 18, 1907. Thelma died on May 7, 1992; she was 85. Buried in Hazelwood Cemetery, Grayson Co., KY.
iv. Betty D., F. Born in 1916. Betty D. died in 1917; she was 1.

On November 1, 1941 when John Tavender was 68, he second married Ollie WHITWORTH, F, in Breckinridge Co., KY. They were divorced in May 1943.
