| The format for this hunt was much more similar to an international-style
Amateur Radio Direction Finding competition than the previous hunt at Umstead
State Park. The greater authenticity was made possible by the hunt being
held in conjunction with an orienteering event sponsored by the Backwoods
Orienteering Klub (BOK) of Raleigh.
One transmitter was placed within 10 meters of each of the five orange-and-white
control marks of the "white" beginners course. Hunters used the orienteering
score cards, and patterned punches, for recording their finds. The transmitters
were the same DJ-S11 HTs, with Montreal Fox Controllers, used during the
April 16 hunt. The controls were all located along major trails leading
through the park, so no off-trail hiking was required. No decoys or other
distractions were placed on the course.
If there had been receivers to lend, there might have been record participation
in this transmitter hunt. Unfortunately, most orienteers don't pack ham-band
receivers. Still, the equipment on hand attracted the attention of many
of the orienteers.
John Swartz, and James Heinis, participants at the April 16 hunt, also
made appearances at this event. John, who didn't have much time to spend,
still found two of the five transmitters. James opted to try the intermediate
"yellow" orienteering course instead of hunting foxes. Little did James
know that two of the yellow course's controls were shared with the white
course---so without hunting, James still had two correct transmitter control
points entered on his score card!
By having the on-foot hunt held in conjunction with the orienteering
event, much of the hard work of organizing the event was done by BOK. The
only work I had to do was to set out the transmitters, which was actually
pretty fun. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to working with BOK in
the future. If anyone is interested in placing transmitters for future
hunts, let me know.
Many thanks to the Backwoods Orienteering Klub of Raleigh for sponsoring
this event, and agreeing to have transmitter hunting as a part of future
BOK events.
Mark June 4 on your calendar for the next 2-meter on-foot hunt. It will
also be held at Umstead State Park. More details will be posted to the
Piedmont Transmitter Tracking web site, and via e-mail. You can also find
more information at the BOK website. |
