Membership

Welcome to WARO, The New Zealand Women Amateur Radio Operators Group, which was formed in 1962 by a group of enthusiastic Women Operators (known as YLs) who could see a growing need for an organisation to meet their special requirements at a time when there were few women licenced and on the air.

You do not have to be a licenced Amateur Radio Operator to be a member of WARO. If your interest lies in this field you are welcome to become an Associate Member, thus ensuring involvement in this absorbing hobby in your own way.

Overseas licenced and non licenced YLs can also be members of WARO and are mostly sponsored in by New Zealand members, though they are welcome to apply for membership on their own behalf.

If you are an OM (male supporter) you may also join as a Friend of WARO.

Activities. For the Licenced Radio Operators we have several regular WARO activities, such as YL nets, the Thelma Souper Memorial Contest held annually, and several WARO Awards that can be earned in your own time. A Bulletin is issued 4x a year to all members and includes news of visiting YLs, new members, YL skeds and frequencies, overseas news, get togethers, and general news from our members. WARO also contributes to the NZART bi monthly magazine Break In and has a small segment each month on NZARTs Official Broadcast.

The Annual General Meeting of WARO is held in conjunction with the NZART Conference in June each year. Officers of the club are elected annually at this AGM.

Gatherings. As YLs we try to never miss an opportunity to meet at other Amateur gatherings such as Car Boot Sales, Branch meetings, and Area get togethers. Some even form groups to travel together to attend other YL gatherings in other countries in the world.

A lot of YLs also play their part in Voluntary Organisations such as Amateur Radio Emergency Communications (AREC), Search and Rescue, Civil Defence, and communications for sporting events, as a community service.

To Join WARO, please provide your name, (Christian and Surname), your callsign if applicable, your address and your email address if you have one.

Fee. For a full member of WARO $15 for a single member or a Family subscription of $17, due at the beginning of June each year.
Associate membership: $5 . Friend of WARO: $15 .
