The Border Belgium/Netherlands (BE/NL)

Border markers along the Belgium/Netherlands border. There are 400 iron border markers and many stone auxiliary markers
Along this border are also the northernmost point of Belgium and the southernmost as well as the westernmost point of the Netherlands.
Grenspalen langs de Belgisch/Nederlandse grens. Er zijn 400 ijzeren grenspalen en ook veel stenen tussenpalen.
Langs deze grens bevinden zich ook het noordelijkste punt van België en zowel het zuidelijkste punt als het westelijkste punt van Nederland.

De grens België/Nederland BE/NL
	Bordermarker 12. Southernmost point of the Netherlands near Sippenaeken (BE). Also see: extreme points of the Netherlands. The tree is Dutch. The brick wall is to prevent the marker from falling of the steep slope. This is the typical BE/NL bordermarker. All markers are the same, but the painting may differ. 1996-06-??
Grenspaal 12. Zuidelijkste punt van Nederland. De link verwijst naar de extreme punten van Nederland. De boom staat in NL De gemetselde fundering is nodig omdat de paal op een steile helling staat. Dit is de typisch BE/NL grenspaal. Alle palen zijn gelijk, alleen het schilderwerk kan verschillen.
	Auxiliary stone in front of an apparent divided café on the border near Meersel-Dreef (BE) and Galder(NL). This is border stone 218a. I have been told that the café used to be divided. But at the demarcation of 1843 the border was decided to go round the building.. GCEBE 2001-09-15 (link to GCEBE-links)
Hulpsteen voor een schijnbaar door de grens gedeeld café op de grens bij Meersel-Dreef (BE) en Galder (NL). Dit is grenssteen 218a. Men vertelde me dat de grens vroeger door het gebouw liep maar bij de grensbepaling van 1843 om het gebouw werd gelegd.
	The owner of the café, showed us this auxiliary border stone in the backyard. As a matter of fact, the garden-wall is build around the stone in a way that it would not touch the border stone. This is border stone 218c. GCEBE 2001-09-15
De eigenaar van het café toonde ons deze hulpsteen achter het gebouw. Het tuinmuurtje is om de steen heen gebouwd opdat het de steen niet raakt. Dit is grenssteen 218c.
	This also is an auxiliary stone. This one also stands between bordermarkers 218 and 219. Its number: 218e. 1998-10-05
Dit is ook een hulpsteen. Deze staat ook tussen grenspaal 218 en 219  Z’n nummer: 218e.
	Bordermarker 219 near Meersel-Dreef (BE). This is the northernmost iron bordermarker on de BE/NL border. The real northernmost point of BE is behind this building (not shown in this photo). The building is called “De Paal” as in grenspaal (= bordermarker) 1998-10-05
Grenspaal 219 nabij Meersel-Dreef (BE). Dit is de meest noordelijke ijzeren grenspaal aan de BE/NL grens. Het echte noordelijkste punt van BE is achter dit gebouw (niet zichtbaar op de foto). Het gebouw heet “De Paal” naar een grenspaal.

Dit is het wapen van Nederland. Opvallend: de leeuw draagt nu een kroon en is bewapend met zwaard en pijlen.
	Bordermarker 360 near the village of Sint Anna ter Muiden (NL). Westernmost point of the Netherlands. Also see: extreme points of the Netherlands. 2000-03-15
Grenspaal 360 nabij Sint Anna ter Muiden (NL). Westelijkste punt van Nederland. De link verwijst naar de extreme punten van Nederland.
	Near Retranchement (NL) are the triple (drieling) bordermarkers 364. This one is 200 meters southwest from the border, on Belgian soil. In 1869 the border was in the water. On that spot was a creek called "Het Zwin". So this is the Belgian auxiliary marker. There is also one on Dutch soil. The real marker 364 can be seen in the distance (and on the next photo). 2000-03-15
De drieling van Retranchement. Drie palen met nummer 364. Deze staat 200 mtr. zuidwest van de grens op Belgisch grondgebied. In 1869 liep de grens door het water. Op die plaats lag een uitloper van Het Zwin. Dus dit is de Belgische hulpgrenspaal. Er is ook een op Nederlands grondgebied. De echte grenspaal 364 is zichtbaar in de verte (en op de volgende foto).
	This is the real bordermarker 364. After the Willem-Leopoldpolder was made in 1873, it was possible to place a marker on the exact spot where the water used to be. All three bordermarkers have the year 1869 on them. Notice the auxiliary borderstone! 2000-03-15
Dit is de officiële grenspaal 364. Nadat de Willem-Leopoldpolder aangelegd was in 1873, kon eindelijk een grenspaal op de juiste plaats gezet worden waar voorheen het water was. Alle drie de palen dragen het jaartal 1869. Let ook op het hulppaaltje.
	This is the Dutch auxiliary marker 364. This one is 200 meters northeast from the border on Dutch soil. Three markers carrying the same number is a unique situation along any of the Dutch borders. 2000-03-15
Dit is de Nederlandse hulppaal. Deze staat 200 mtr. noordoost van de grens op Nederlands grondgebied. Drie palen met hetzelfde nummer, dat is uniek langs alle Nederlandse grenzen.
	This is bordermarker 369 and the very last one. The marker should be standing in the tidal zone somewhere behind the little borderfreak. But as can be expected, the marker fell over many times. After being replaced in 1950, 1952, 1969 and 1990 the bordermarker got its definitive place on 1996-07-26. So in fact it lost its function of marking the border! On my search for the marker I crossed the tidal zone called "Het Zwin" in vain, because I didn't know the marker was moved to a new position. Lucky enough, on an other occacion, my wife accidentally saw it standing on the dike. 2000-03-16
Dit is grenspaal 369 en de allerlaatste. De paal hoort te staan in het getijdengebied achter de jonge grenspaalonderzoeker. Maar zoals verwacht kan worden, de paal is regelmatig omvergespoeld. Na herplaatsingen in 1950, 1952, 1969 en 1990 kreeg de paal zijn definitieve plaats op 26-7-1996. Dus in feite markeert hij niet langer de exacte grens. Op mijn zoektocht naar de paal heb ik het gehele getijdengebied van Het Zwin tevergeefs doorkruist. Ik wist niet dat de paal naar een andere locatie was verplaatst. Gelukkig zag mijn vrouw hem toevallig op de dijk staan.
