In her day she was the largest ship, the fastest and the most luxurious. She with 2220 passengers with her. Yet only 705 would ever see the port where she was going. Named unsinkable, but she died on her maiden voyage. In the picture here, Titanic weighs anchor and sails off into history in this last photo ever taken of her.

Recovered in 1987, the ships bell was originally on the crows nest, and was the last rung by Frederick Fleet at 11:40pm on the night of April 14,1912,after spotted the iceberg in the ships path. On that fateful night, Fleet gave three sharp tugs on the bell's lanyard, then snatched the telephone to the bridge it's cradle inside the mast.

Fleet :"Are you there?" he said into the mouthpiece,

Bridge : " What did you see ?"

Fleet : Iceberg right ahead,

Bridge : Thank you ".

Captain Edward James Smith

was born in Hanley, Stoke, England January 27, 1850. While still a teenager, he took a job working aboard a sailing ship, and would work aboard ships for the rest of his life.
In 1880, after many years of experience plying the sea, he took a job with the White Star Line as a captain.
Captain Smith soon became a master seaman, and was considered the top dog in the formidable White Star fleet. He often took the company's ships out on their sea trials and their first few voyages.
His capability and experience attracted a lot of people to him. Many of the White Star employees would request to be transferred to whatever ship he was captaining at the time in order to be near the "millionaires captain".
At the time of the disaster, Smith had a wife, and a daughter.
Prior to the disaster, Smith had captained the Olympic, Titanic's identical sister ship, for almost a year.
All in all, Captain Smith had 46 years of experience on the sea, including captaining a ship during the Boer war. Sadly, he planned to retire after Titanic's maiden voyage
