An Overview of the Underestimated Magnetic Loop HF Antenna”.
By Leigh Turner, VK5KLT.
This paper has been stimulated by the visit and talk by Professor Mike Underhill (G3LHZ) early this year.

Leigh has placed the paper on our website for those interested in this antenna, and the many interesting aspects pertaining to its theory and practice.

NB: The full text of Leigh’s paper can be found at our website:
Go to
Small (loop) Antennas to see all the articles on Small Loops on our website.
Leigh's article is
The Underestimated Magnetic Loop HF Antenna , downloadable here or from the Small Loop Antennas page.

Also, in relation to this matter, Leigh and our other club antenna guru, Lloyd Butler (VK5BR), have been involved in a lengthy discussion on some of the aspects of this and other antenna design and principles.
Lloyd has produced a full summary of their discussions in his paper.
It also contains copies of sketches by Lloyd, and from the Tampere Radio Club site, and a clever way to tune a small loop using reflected reactance.
It's entitled “Loop_Discussion_ExtractsTest.pdf”, and is available on our website in the abovementioned section.

(Both papers from these two gents provide a wealth of educational material. Members are encouraged to peruse them. Ed.)
