The OSCAR (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur
Radio) satellites
are amateur radio stations designed and built by volunteer hams
from all over the world.
The design, construction and maintenance of the satellites
is controlled by AMSAT (The
Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation),
a group of volunteer amateur satellite enthusiasts with members
all over the world.
AMSAT has its headquarters in Washington DC USA.
It provides technical and operating advice through its newsletters.
Australis OSCAR
5 - the 5th amateur satellite
was designed and built at the University of
Melbourne
by a group of students mostly under-graduate
members
of the Astronautical Society and Radio Club,
it was launched on January 23rd 1970,
by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).
There are now ten amateur satellites in space,
since the demise of OSCAR 13 which was launched in June 1988
and ceased to operate in November 1996.
The International Space Station that is being built
should have a permanent Amateur Radio station on board,
it will probably be known as ARISS.
