VK6RPH
History
VK6RPH, the Perth Beacon Service,
started life in the 1950's as VK6VF
 operating only on 50.002 Mhz.
In those days unattended operation was not permitted,
so the transmitter was located at the home locations
of various operators, with extended but intermittent operation.

Genuine continuous operation was achieved with a change of attitude
by the authorities to unattended operation and a rebuild and shift
to a location on the tower of  television station
 TVW Channel 7 in Perth.
The callsign in this period was changed to VK6RTV
 to reflect new licensing provisions.

A transmission in the 2 metre band on 145.000 Mhz was added
in addition to 52.006 Mhz (later 52.460 MHz) at this time.

The callsign was changed again after a few years to VK6RPH
to release RTV for a proposed ATV repeater
and to follow a rough convention of
abbreviating the place name
 in the callsign.

In the meantime, a second beacon service using the call VK6RPR
had been commissioned from a site in Nedlands.
This  station operated on 432.166 and 1296.500 Mhz.

Tenure at TVW came to an end when maintenance requirements
on the tower obliged the WA VHF Group to seek another
site and similar problems led to the closure of VK6RPR.

Then followed a long period of intermittent operation at the
home of VK6KRC who generously provided space and antennas.

During this time a new set of transmitters with outputs
on the four current frequencies was commissioned.

In September 1995 a move was made to the present site,
which has been made available by the generosity of
Swan Television and Radio Broadcasters Pty Ltd,
licensee of  television station STW Channel 9.

This move has seen a return to continuous operation,
backed up by the emergency mains supply at the site.

Results

Results at the STW 9 site have been very satisfactory,
with reports of 50.066 Mhz being received from
New Zealand and Japan, and 144.460, 432.460 and 1296.460 Mhz
reported in VK3 and VK5 at distances beyond 2000Km.
