Federal Conference
VK6WZ Harry noted that June AR
carried pictures of 20 people attending the Federal Conference.
He asked
(i) was this the total, (ii)
what governs who gets to go, (iii)
who pays, and (iv) who votes
?
VK6UU Will (VK6 Federal Councillor) gave the answers:
(i) The ones pictured were the
main attendees plus one or two VK2's assisting
(the conference was held at the VK2 offices).
(ii) The Federal President, the
three Federal Directors,
and the Federal Councillors (ie ONE DELEGATE) from each division
attend at the expense of the Federal WIA.
(iii) Additional attendees who
have been ACCREDITED as Alternate Federal Councillor s
by their division attend at the expense of their division or privately.
EG Those attending from VK6 were:
VK6UU Will, Federal Councillor paid by Federal.
VK6LZ Cliff , Alternate paid by VK6 Division.
VK6ZLZ Christine Alternate Private (Paid her own air fare and expenses)
. (iv) ONLY the Federal Councillors
(ONE from each division) Vote.
However the Federal President as chairman has a casting vote (traditionally
used to maintain the status quo).
Promotion of Amateur Radio
One participant said that in response to a request from his 8 year old
grandson
for help with his science class, he had attended the school
and gave a demonstration of how the Titanic would have sent out an
SOS,
he also answered a dozen or so questions from the class.
The new Community TV channel 31 (apparently using the studios at Mt.
Lawley TAFE
and the transmitter/antenna at the SBS site) was discussed as a possible
way to publicize AR.
Overseas Trip
One participant who is visiting Europe and the UK
needed Information on what was required to operate AR in the UK.
A discussion ensued with a recent returnee advising that there were
two options
For a short stay,
contact the UK licensing authority,
pay a fee and operate using normal VK call stroke G.
For longer stay obtain a reciprocal G licence.
Further information would be given if he cared to phone,
however it was essential to apply early before leaving Australia.
It was also pointed out that the necessary forms were available on
the internet.
A 1750Hz tone is required to operate some UK repeaters, and some use
12.5 Khz spacing.
Wireless Hill Museum
At the Conference of Clubs, it was mentioned that Melville Council
were interested in establishing a working AR display, a participant
asked what progress had been made.
Tony VK6TS reported that Melville wanted to re-install the Amateur
Radio section,
they had quite a bit of equipment in a store room,
this subject would be covered in detail on Newswest on Sunday next.
Morse Beacon
The recent failure of the Perth Morse Beacon was discussed,
and an update was given by Clive VK6CSW:
It failed 6 to 8 weeks ago, and it was initially thought that the xmitter
PA had failed
as it had a range of about 150 metres, however this was not so,
the xmitter had detected a mismatch and had shut down,
it was now necessary to check the antenna,
unfortunately the site owner was happy to allow the use of the redundant
antenna
but would not allow the tower to be climbed so that an alternative
site may be required.
Internet/WIA Home Page
A lengthy discussion eventuated on Internet URL's
particularly in relation to Federal and Divisional WIA home pages,
the linking of such, and easier ways of accessing them.
eg. The Federal address is www.wia.org.au
and division pages are linked.
