1996 Report
On the evening of Friday 27th September 1996
60 people meet at Ogden's restaurant at the
Gosnell's Hotel.
We had a room to ourselves, which was good,
considering the noise from outside as the
evening progressed.
The QRM in our room was fairly high too!!
In total 80 people including children, attended
all or some part of the ALARAMEET.
There were 28 YLs from VK and 14 YLs from
overseas.
The overseas YLs were SM, VE, FK and ZL.
Saturday morning, 28th September
The Colonial Room at The White House was a
hive of activity as people arrived,
meeting up with old friends and putting faces
to those they had only spoken to on air.
President of VK6 Division of WIA VK6LZ Cliff,
and
Secretary VK6ZLZ Christine were also present.
Items for the craft table were a veriety of
interesting crafts
and covered two trestles, Well done.
Door prizes practically covered another trestle.
Thank you to all who gave prizes.
The Special Effort was really Special,
with 15 prizes in all being donated and 93
numbers being taken.
A big thank you to all who participated either
in donating prizes and/or taking numbers.
The prizes were all won by those attending
ALARAMEET.
Our Baby Photo competition created a lot of
interest, with 31 entries.
A list of names of those who were in the photos
was put on the board also,
but 15 was the highest score by Bev VK4NBC.
Murphy was around when Jeff VK6JKR was trying
to take the group photos,
but managed to get the flash operating after
cleaning the contact plate.
After the photos, President Christine VK5CTY
officially opened
ALARAMEET 1996 and welcomed those attending.
Best wishes were read from several who were
unable to join us.
After lunch we were on the articulated bus,
with our driver for 3 days, Frans.
A short tour of the city, then up to kings
park for the Wildflower Festival,
where the massed plantings made a lovely splash
of colour.
Before our buffet dinner, Jack Hondros, Manager
of the White House,
gave us some history on our venue, which was
built in 1888.
Guests of ALARA at our dinner were the
Federal President of the WIA Neil Penfold,
VK6NE and his wife Naomi.
After dinner WARO (Woman's Amateur Radio Association)
represented by Jill ZL2DBO, and NZART represented
by Carol ZL2VQ,
made presentations to ALARA, with President
Christine accepting these and
responding with thanks from ALARA.
We had a 21st Birthday cake made by Bev VK6DE
and iced by one of Bev's frieends in Geraldton,
with the ALARA badge made in icing as part
of the decoration.
Norma VK2YL, ALARA's first President, cut the
cake and gave a short speech,
saying how pleased she was to see alara still
going strong after 21 years.
Sunday morning we were on the bus again,
to be taken to the ferry for a river trip
to Fremantle, where the bus met us.
After a short tour around the streets, we
had about 2 1/2 hours
to look around the Markets and city, and find
a spot for lunch.
We arrived back at our venue at 3pm for afternoon
tea,
drawing of the Special Effort, door prizes,
Mars bar awards,
Photo competition result etc.
Elizabeth VE7YL, on behalf of CLARA,
(Canadian Ladies Amateur Radio Association)
presented Gwen VK3DYL with a plaque which
was the # 2 DXCC YL.
Gwen has worked 140 YL countries. Elizabeth
has plaque # 1.
Aimee FK8FA presented Bev VK6DE and Poppy VK6YF
with cushions she had made, and thanked Bev
and Poppy
for the work they had done for ALARAMEET.
President Christine announced that the next
ALARAMEET would
be held in Brisbane in 1999 and the co-ordinator
is Bev VK4NBC.
Bev VK6DE handed the ALARA banner to Bev VK4NBC
and ALARAMEET 1996 was officially closed.
Monday 30th, 50 of us took the bus trip to
Mundaring Weir,
which was crowded with sightseers viewing
the overflow, the first in 22 years.
We had lamb on a spit for lunch, with bread
rolls and salads,
then a look through the C. Y. O'Connor Museum.
Back to our accommodation, with about 20 going
to a Chinese restaurant for the evening meal.
Tuesday 1st October, 33 (an appropriate number
for a YL meet)
were on the ferry to Rottnest Island,
including the co-ordinator on her first trip
to the Island!!
32 took the 2 hour bus tour of the Island,
while Geoff VK5TY did the guns and tunnels.
A pleasant day with several Quokkas seen.
The ferry crossings on the Supercat were good.
About 25 went to an Italian restaurant that
night.
It seems that most of those attending ALARAMEET
1996
had an enjoyable time from comments I received.
Thank you to all those who came to Perth and
made possible
a successful ALARAMEET, and look forward to
ALARAMEET 1999 in Brisbane.

Most of the visitors to Perth had to return
to their respective homes,
so by Wednesday 3rd October there were only
about half a dozen of us left for
the visit to the Perth Royal Show, we all
met at a suburban railway station
and took the local train for the days outing
to the Show-grounds at Claremont.
Gwen VK3DYL had placed an exhibit in
the Cross-stitch section and won 2nd place.
The pottery vase that was made by Jane Watkins
the wife of Roy VK6XV
and given to the WIA several years ago was
donated to ALARAMEET Perth as a prize.
It was won by Norma VK6PNS in the Special
effort.
Added by Christine VK6ZLZ.
