International Festival Special Event Station

May 2, 1998

What a pleasant surprise when we arrived at the Greenville town common on 2 May about 0730 and saw John McCoy, K4KBB, sitting under a 12 by 12 canopy already erected - we were told the day before we weren't going to get one. That in itself made it a great improvement over last year. While Ken Graph, N8FF, and Buster the Wonder Dog kept things under control under the canopy, John, Bernie Nobles, WA4MOK, Wayne Ross, WD4JPQ, Paul Fletcher, KS4YF, and Macon Dail, WB4PMQ, put up the club's mew R7000 Cushcraft vertical. It was good preparation for Field Day. Ken, who prefers cw, actually did most of the phone work. Also at the mike was Juanita Humbles, KE4JWK. Gary Gasperini, KU4NQ, came to the rescue in two ways: helping us with the take down and bringing fresh bread from one of the vendors. Luke Davis, KE4WGQ, also provided us moral support. We also had some other BARC members visit after helping with the Teddy Bear Walk.

Anyone who was on the radio that Saturday knows the conditions were terrible especially on 20 meters. Everyone we talked to was complaining. I guess we can consider ourselves lucky to have made 45 contacts. Four of those were from Italy - they were having a contest. Even the mayor of Greenville got on the air taking to Jack, K1AMO, who was mobile in Delaware on a trip from Florida to Connecticut. Another interesting QSO was one I had with Bob at the Discovery Place Science Museum in Charlotte, NC. They have a permanent station, KI4YV, which is open all year long - they welcome visiting hams to use the equipment. We will QSL all our contacts.

The weather was great, and the activities around us were interesting. We had three people sign up for the new ham class when we have it and a lot more people in Greenville know who BARC is. Marlin Hardee, KF4MHV, and his son Brian, KF4MTL, joined BARC at the festival. Thanks to all who helped out or came by. Don't miss out on the fun next year.
