Congratulations to Jerry (W8LR) for earning first place in the AMSAT-HB HB9RG Category 2 Trophy, held from March 3–16, 2025. Jerry achieved the greatest satellite contact distance for 10 QSOs, standing out in the portable and fixed stations category with operators from multiple locations around the globe.
The AMSAT Switzerland contest honors Dr. Hans Rudolf Lauber (HB9RG), a pioneer in amateur satellite radio. On March 10, 1965, HB9RG and Alfons Häring (DL6EZA) made history with the first amateur radio contact via satellite.
Jerry accomplished this impressive feat using an ICOM-9700 paired with an Arrow Alaskan VHF/UHF interlaced Yagi antenna, going up against home-based stations equipped with larger arrays and full azimuth/elevation tracking systems.
This is a remarkable achievement in the world of amateur radio.
Well done, Jerry!
