Cub Scout Pack Ham Radio Showcase
On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, the Vestal United Methodist Church became a hub of communication and discovery as the Scouts, along with their parents, engaged in interactive ham radio demonstrations. Hosted by our club members, the event introduced young minds to the fascinating world of radio communication through hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and learning.
Three breakout sessions kept the event lively; offering Scouts a chance to rotate through engaging demonstrations.
· The first activity, "Get on the Air," allowed participants to experience radio communication firsthand. Using FRS radios, Scouts relayed messages from opposite ends of the room, while club members assisted in demonstrating simplex contacts with handheld ham radios. Each Scout earned a certificate for successfully making a radio connection, marking their first step into the world of wireless communication.
· At the Morse code station, Scouts learned how to spell their names using Morse code charts. They listened to the rhythmic beeps of Morse transmissions, decoding messages in an activity that highlighted the enduring relevance of traditional radio techniques.
· The third session highlighted the broader spectrum of amateur radio. Scouts explored digital modes, including a live demonstration of FT8 by remoting into W2OW, displaying signals heard across the globe on PSK Reporter. Operators shared recordings of contacts via amateur radio with the International Space Station, providing real-world examples of how ham radio bridges distances—even talking with astronauts in orbit.
To further inspire young radio operators, each Scout picked a DX QSL card—proof of a contact from around the world—and located the corresponding country on a globe or map, reinforcing geography alongside radio communication. Brochures from the American Radio Relay League and Binghamton Amateur Radio Association were distributed, encouraging families to get involved in upcoming events such as International Marconi Day, ARRL Field Day, and the New York State QSO Party.
With an enthusiastic response from cub scouts and parents alike, the event successfully highlighted the magic of ham radio. Whether through hands-on communication, decoding Morse messages, or exploring space-age radio technologies, the evening ignited a sense of curiosity and adventure—proving that even in a world dominated by smartphones and instant messaging, the art of radio remains as exciting as ever.

International
Marconi Day
The Binghamton Amateur Radio Association (BARA) proudly continues its annual tradition of participating in International Marconi Day, a global event celebrating Guglielmo Marconi’s groundbreaking contributions to radio. Held on the Saturday closest to Marconi’s birthday, this event unites amateur radio operators worldwide as they transmit from historic sites linked to his pioneering work.
BARA operates from the historic Marconi Tower in downtown Binghamton, a rare survivor of the original four towers once located in Binghamton and Scranton. Unlike most structures of its kind, dismantled during World War II for the war effort, this tower endures as a tangible link to Marconi’s legacy. Situated near the baseball stadium and train station, it remains a striking reminder of communication history amidst the modern cityscape.
International Marconi Day is more than a tribute—it’s an opportunity to explore the evolution of radio and its lasting impact. Participating stations around the world honor Marconi’s ingenuity while highlighting amateur radio’s role in education, experimentation, and public service. By transmitting from the Marconi Tower, BARA connects the community to this global celebration, inspiring curiosity and appreciation for the heritage of radio.
Whether you're a seasoned operator, a history enthusiast, or simply intrigued by the Marconi Tower’s story, this event offers a hands-on experience with radio’s past and present. BARA members are dedicated to making each year’s celebration engaging and memorable, sharing their knowledge and passion with all who attend.
Join us for International Marconi Day and discover the enduring legacy of one of history’s greatest innovators.
