DOWN AT THE DEPOT
Telegraphy Remembered
at Crossroads Village:
September1996 saw GLARR operating in the spirit of the old time rail telegraphers from Crossroads
Village’s Huckleberry Railroad depot. The difference was that we were “wireless”.
Crossroads Village, located near Flint, Michigan, USA, is a collection of
historic buildings that that have been relocated, preserved and restored. They are now open to the public and are operated by the Genesee County (Michigan) Parks and Recreation Commission as a re-creation of a pre-automobile era village.
Costumed craftspeople and period interpreters make the visitor to the village feel they
have stepped back in time to a simpler, quieter, period. One when the term horsepower really
meant horsepower.
The event was a success with no equipment problems. Locations of stations contacted ranged
from coast-to-coast, into several Canadian Provinces and the Caribbean
As usual, we passed out literature to the public about Amateur Radio’s role as both, a hobby,
and a public service. The Flint (MI) Advance newspaper chain ran a descriptive article in all seven of
their area papers prior to and after the event.
