Comments and highlights of the Oct 13, 2022 LW Results
Due to S9 noise the only possibility to try for LW NDBs was on the final day. We had managed to cut the noise dramatically the afternoon before with much detective work. Details further down the page.

35 Alaskan NDBs is really excellent for a West Coast DXpedition these days as many of the regulars are off-air up north with and without NOTAMS, many with no explanation. I was in Anchorage in late August and the Perseus recordings made there confirmed this. So a very decent opening to Alaska, along with the usual North Pacifics plus the Russian oil rig heard here before. The one South Pacifc beacon 352 RG was heard on the SW facing flag. Really poor LW conditions there despite widespread AUS and NZL DX on MW. I was pleased as my Grayland results featured NO NDBs last year due to the noise so having something interesting to report is encouraging! (Good effort by my partners at abating noise).

Highlights: Excellent Japan including the 1663.5 Khz MARTIS stations (all 3 with solid IDs) and a weak unid on 1649.5 (probably Osaka). Per JCG pubs the power output of Nagoya Harbor Radar is 10 watts USB.

A personal record 100+ Japanese stations received; Also numerous Philippines such as DYHP 612, Vietnam with I/S bells on 630 & 1071 Khz, Palau on 1584 Khz, Russian MW beacons UB on 907 Khz,  globally unreported OI on 786 Khz, and a weak AD on 915 Khz (North American first). Best Alaskan MW reception I've ever experienced with 30 Alaskans incl 3 Fairbanks. 13 Hawaiians despite KKNE 940 and KPRP 650 being silent (FCC license cancellation). 43 combined AK/HI is a personal record as is 40+ China. Unexpected good results with massive numbers of stations heard over the 3 nights. The nights shaped up as follows:

Oct 11 - Very good Japan, Philippines, Vietnam and China. Three MARTIS stations in on 1663.5 and Russian MW beacons UB and OI.
Oct 12 - Great for Hawaii, Kiribati, Palau and some Australians. The least productive night of the three on the northern path.
Oct 13 -  Absolutely outstanding for Japan and Alaska. the MARTIS stations and Russian MW beacons were even better than Oct 11. We even added AD 915 khz and enjoyed the best China DX I have heard from Grayland to include 1 KW stations from both China and Taiwan. 100W Japan repeaters were in on 1026, 1161, 1539 and 1584 Khz and the DX rolled in well past 1600 UTC.

The 160-foot DKAZ was set up at 290° True using a lensatic compass.

DXpedition Lessons Learned:

Once again we were plagued by pulsating noise peaking around 400 Khz and loud. MW was unaffected except at 540 Khz and below. My partners worked diligently despite being MW guys to really knock down the QRM and on the final day we had success. One noisy power bar (with 5v inverters built in) identified, then powering the Bodnar GPS clock and KiwiSDR with batteries all but solved the problem. On the final morning 35 Alaskans with a few extremely rare and difficult beacons such as LUR, AMF and UTO were heard along with some typical North Pacifics. This verified success but some noise remains around 400-500 Khz where several Russian beacons can be found (BT 482 khz did just make it through). The biggest single improvement seemed to be powering the KiwiSDR with batteries. What a difference! The batteries expired during the night so we need to be prepared with full charges / larger packs next time.

Identifying Chinese MW Stations

Russian VFR Aero Chart depicting Far Eastern NDBs Bill's 2021 Grayland catch "HY 710" is there as is "UB 907". "OI 786" (Cyrillic "OH") was identified HERE as coming from Okha, northern Sakhalin Island.
