As we near the end of our current year and soon begin the next...please sign up to help with either our District nets or to provide our District report on the weekly County net. We encourage you to come to the station or operate from home. Even without good simplex coverage you could do the main net on the crosslinked repeaters from home. Scripts and the net assignments are on the District website. Find a schedule vacancy and contact me at [email protected] with any Monday when you can help. The 48 hour participation requirement will be enforced this year and next.

To find more operating space in Lomita Station's DCS room Deane S-50 and I began clearing outdated/unneeded materials from our file cabinet and underneath the radio positions. In a large protective container beneath our HF radio we have gently-used DCS uniform items donated by former members or their estates--now being offered free of charge to current D3/17 members. Available are: DCS windbreaker jackets--two available in size Large, two in X-Large; one XX-Large; and one XXX-Large; DCS green polo shirt, one size XX-Large; two DCS caps with the yellow front patch logo; one pair olive green pants, size 44 waist; and one DCS reflective safety vest in size XX-Large. All items need to be picked up at the Lomita Station DCS room during one of our Monday night nets. While supplies last please advise if you need one of these free uniform items and we'll reserve it for you.

I will be presenting a class on "Getting up to speed with changes in ICS-100/700" which you will find especially valuable if you took these FEMA courses before June 2018. If you took ICS-100/700 since June 2018 you will now understand what the rest of us had been thinking. Also, Deane Bouvier will be giving a class about the new BridgeCom 222-225 MHz radios now in or coming to your DCS radio room. The Webex meeting link info will be sent later this week.

This is an approved DCS activity at the Lomita Station that qualifies for DCS hours (operating from other sites or your home does not qualify for DCS hours.) If you haven't already done so please let me know if you would be interested in operating this Saturday in our DCS room...DCS uniform and ID are requred. Portions of our weekly District nets are operated from the Lomita Sheriff Station on most Monday nights but we still need volunteers handling other segments from home stations. We have scripts that make net operation easier and the combined coverage from W6TRW 2m and K6RH 440 repeaters will enable many without good simplex coverage to handle our main net. Contact me at [email protected] with any Monday when you can help either from your home or from the Lomita Sheriff Station (at the latter working alongside S-60 or me).

Thank you to everyone who served at the Gardena Public Safety Day and Emergency Preparedness Expo last Saturday. We had excellent meetings with some key people and the DCS booth featured our first all-electronic displays using a solar generator with solar panels powering a computer monitor and two computing devices. Staffing our DCS exhibit were Steve, T-227; Vickie, T-218; and Deane, S-50 along with myself. Also serving there for City of Gardena-related organizations were Stuart, T-61; Gary, T-222; and Cindy, T-223.

Tomorrow morning the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District's 220 MHz amateur radio disaster communication net is holding its monthly drill. A school district ham operator is net control for the drill's repeater portion and we operate the simplex portion from the Lomita Sheriff Station's DCS room. The Lomita station's 81' antenna tower does an excellent job communicating with 5-watt handheld radios at the 23 school sites.

Tonight's District nets at 1930 hours will use the 2-meter W6TRW repeater cross-linked with the 440 K6RH Rolling Hills repeater, our 2-meter TAC-3 simplex frequency, the 220 simplex frequency (voice net followed by an NBEMS digital message), the 440 PV-West repeater, and another NBEMS message on 2-meter TAC-3 simplex. All DCS members and members of the South Bay's city-affiliated disaster amateur radio groups are encouraged to check in and relay for other stations on simplex.

A reminder about DCS Hours: DCS returns to its 48-hours minimum annual service requirement in 2023 after reducing annual service hours during 2020-2022. Please check into Monday night nets or the countywide Tuesday noon nets as you can. DCS continues offering quarterly training and communication exercises on various Saturdays during the year, two District meetings for us (Spring and Fall), various operating events, and other avenues for earning DCS hours.

Next Monday, March 6, it's our turn operating the DCS County net at 1900 hours from the South Los Angeles Sheriff Station. Please advise if you can help operate from there. We will coordinate arrangements with everyone involved so we all go inside the station together.

Keeping you apprised of upcoming DCS events: the next DCS quarterly training will be online Saturday morning, March 4; DCS' next communication exercise is Saturday morning, March 18; and the 2023 Countywide DCS annual member meeting is being held virtually on Monday evening, March 20. Additionally, we are planning a virtual Districts 3 & 17 member meeting on two dates in April. More info to follow as the respective dates near.

We led a successful radio operation at the Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K yesterday. Working with us were four Redondo Beach Police Department Volunteers who are also licensed hams and several other city radio group operators. Serving from our DCS unit were: Deane, S-50, as Shadow to the Race Director; Ray, T-88, as Rover in the Start/Finish area; Jeff, T-234, at Mile 4 on The Esplanade; and myself at net control.

We need additional operators for radio communication at next Sunday's annual Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K from 0615-1030 hours in conjunction with Redondo Beach Police Department volunteers. Positions are available along the route--mostly on Catalina Avenue and The Esplanade--as well as the Start/Finish area at King Harbor. DCS uniform and a 440 HT radio are required. This activity qualifies for DCS Hours and is a fun event with many costumed participants among the 7,000+ runners. Please let me know as soon as possible if you can operate on February 12...and thank you to those who already volunteered. Members of other DCS Districts are also welcome to participate.
