TURNER +3B

Big brother is watching you

Turner logo

TURNER +3B

With some small exceptions (picture, link and measurements), this page is similar to the TURNER +3 page, just because this two mic are completely similar but the color. The B suffix stands for black.

You have to read the reviews for this mic on eHam.net (not all the stuff there got a 4.7/5). This mic is just incredible, so old and such a powerfull modulation. Dont turn the mike gain too high, 9 o’clock is more than sufficient for all my rigs and probably yours, pay attention on that if you dont have any way to monitor your modulation on the air. Clearly a mic for SSB DX or chewing the rag on AM.The SSK, also from TURNER will be probably better on FM but have to check that later. Till now my favorite microphone with his cristal clear modulation for DX.

“Nutrition facts”

Turner +3B siteYear : 1970/1972
Type of microphone : Ceramic
Microphone characteristic : omni directional
Sensitivity : -23dB (0dB = 1Volt/microbar)
Nominal output : 700mV
Max output : 300mV
Output at mid range : 50mV
Frequency response : 300Hz - 3.5kHz
Output impedance : 5KOhm.
Amplifier voltage gain : 33dB
Compression : Yes
Meter : No
Echo : No
Lock switch : Yes
Tx LED : No
Battery : 9V

Remarks, -23db (0dB=1Volt/microbar) is a quite old reference system used mostly by non european manufacturers. -23dB(0dB=1Volt/microbar) is equivalent to -3dB(0dB=1Volt/Pa) the now used reference. This means that if you speak loud (not cry) in your microphone from about 2 inches a distance you should get 707mV(max output) at the output of the microphone (at 1KHz and 600Ohm load) . I measure 300mV with a fresh battery, so well below specifications but enough to drive any rig.
I made further measurements as I found 300mV quite low. All measurements were made with 600 Ohm load, 94dBSPL
@1KHz I got 300mV, @2KHz I got 600mV, @3KHz I got 700mV
I think that TURNER made there measurements at 3 or 3.5KHz. In the specifications TURNER wrote that the +3B has a tailored frequency response of 300 to 3500Hz with rising characteristic so theorie met almost measurements.

My opinion, my best microphone with a cristal clear modulation tailored for ssb DX or the one who wants a powerfull AM modulation , silent pedal switch, full metal jacket.

Seen price: 30€ (poor conds) to 150€(mint to mint boxed)

My opinion : 4.2 stars from 5
