My AIS station comprises of an EASYAIS receiver with a dedicated homebrew antenna, Built from a design by Neil Arundale. The software i use is SHIPPLOTTER which can be easily downloaded and when registered opens up a whole host of options.

The system is on most of the time and i regularly receive ships out to and above 40 Nm with this set up. I am about 250 Feet above sea level and the antenna is only mounted just above ground level and i have found this antenna to be much better than a conventional marine band antenna.
