Air Force and NOAA aircraft Hurricane Reconnaissance reports are
fast but difficult ways to get some of the latest hurricane
information. In the past, they used voice-only in the HF radio
band. The aircraft now mainly use Military SATCOM and other
satellites for reconnaissance messages. The USAFRES 53rd WRS WC-130
aircraft transmits weather reconnaissance observations via the
Air Force Satellite Communications System (AFSATCOM) Aircraft-to-Satellite
Data Link or backup via High Frequency (HF) radio phone patch.
DOC NOAA WP-3D aircraft via a low-speed Geo satellite link. The
DOC NOAA Gulfstream-IV jet transmits Temp Drop messages via
commercial INMARSAT (2400 baud) mini-M or Iridium SATCOM. Air to
Air Primary: VHF 123.05 MHz, Secondary: UHF 304.8 MHz, Backup: HF
4701 kHz USB. The NOAA aircraft are based at MacDill AFB, FL and
the USAFRES aircraft are based at Keesler AFB, MS and
can be temporarily relocated to operate out of other military
fields or stationed closer to Caribbean storms at St. Croix,
Virgin Islands airport.

Tropical Synoptic Forecast Aids
Hurricanes can form from
thunderstorms when the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is > 80
degress F (= 26 C), if relative humidities are high in the lower
and middle troposphere, and from absence of wind shear with
height which allows cyclonic development. A hurricane can rapidly
increase in intensity after crossing over a warm eddy of water or
loop current. In 1969 Hurricane
Camille, a
Category-5 that hit the mainland U.S., developed into a Category-5
hurricane in just 3-days from being a tropical disturbance south
of Cuba.

June-to-November hurricane season. It describes the previous
month's tropical cyclone actvity and gives details on the
cyclones as known at that time. The last Tropical Weather Summary
of the season gives an brief account of the whole season.

They get a name when
reaching at least Tropical Storm strength and keep that name even
if it weakens below Tropical Storm strength or if the same system
regenerates. Otherwise, they get no name just the storm# [they
spell out the number] if it remains no stronger than a Tropical
Depression. I keep the storm# because it is very useful for link
testing.
If a named storm above is in Italics, then it is or was a
hurricane.

AFWA readouts will augment NESDIS surveillance
for the North Atlantic and Eastern Pacific. AFWA will, resources
permitting, transmit four daily electronic text bulletins,
describing the location and intensity classification of the
system to the TPC/NHC on organized disturbances evident at the
tropical classification of one point five (T-1.5) or higher. AFWA
will, resources permitting, provide gale wind radius analysis
utilizing SSM/I data for all systems with maximum intensities
greater than 50 kt.

Issued
by local National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Offices
(WFO) only if their County Warning Area (CWA) is effected by a
tropical storm or hurricane. HLS is issued when a tropical
cyclone is close to the coast every 2 to 3 hours or more
frequently as circumstances warrant. Usely issued midway between NHC's Tropical Cyclone Public Advisory.

Inland
Tropical/Sub-Tropical Cyclone Storm Summaries (text)
_
Tropical
Storm Summaries are issued by the Hydrometeorological Prediction
Center (HPC) after any named tropical or sub-tropical cyclone has
moved inland and public advisories are no longer issued by the
National Hurricane Center (NHC). Tropical Storm Summaries will
continue to be issued as long as there is a threat of severe
weather or flash flooding from the storm or its remnants. The
Tropical Storm Summaries (TCPAT#) are numbered sequentially but
continuing from the last numbered advisory issued on the storm by
the NHC for the tropical cyclone. They are transmitted if needed
four times a day near 0300Z, 0900Z, 1500Z, and 2100Z.

Track
Models
_
Track models can
have better forecast skills than NHC's official track forecasts.
The National Hurricane Center forecast track can have significant
forecast errors beyond 24 hours. Cyclones have tracked outside
the margin of error in the NHC 72-hour track forecasts. Therefore,
it is suggested that the NCEP or the TPC branch allow public
access to all track model data not just the NHC track. They
should also produce model graphics and current forecast
verifications of current storms. All track models should be
available to the public on a timely basis so at least we can do
verifications, not hidden or no access or slowly updated.

compared to the NHC (OFCL) official 72-hour forecast.
