Amateur Radio (ham radio) is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into space, all without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational, and can be a lifeline during times of need. Amateur radio has repeatedly proven the one reliable way to communicate when all others fail. Using amateur radio frequencies requires a license from the FCC. The Technician class license is the easiest to earn and what is needed for local communication.
The General Class license will give you more privileges, giving you the ability to operate on most of the high frequency amateur radio allocations. This will allow for global communication, however more privileges means more responsibility and hence more training and knowledge.
EPARA offers classes to help you get your license, we offer Technician and General license classes.
Classes are held at the Monroe County 911 Control Center.
