NXDN

NXDN, which stands for Next Generation Digital Narrowband, is an advanced digital radio protocol developed through a collaboration between Icom Incorporated and Kenwood Corporation. This protocol was designed to meet the stringent requirements of modern communication systems, particularly in the realm of public land mobile radio systems. NXDN operates using Frequency-Division Multiple Access (FDMA) technology, which allows multiple communication streams to be separated by frequency and run concurrently. This technology supports both voice and data transmission, making it versatile for various applications. One of the key features of NXDN is its ability to operate in very narrow bandwidths of 6.25 kHz or 12.5 kHz, which significantly enhances spectrum efficiency compared to traditional analog systems.

The development of NXDN was driven by the need for a reliable and efficient communication protocol that could comply with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandate for narrowbanding. This mandate required all communications systems covered by Part 90 regulations to use narrowband technology by January 1, 2013. NXDN not only met these requirements but also provided a future-proof solution that could adapt to even narrower bandwidths if needed. The protocol’s architecture allows for flexible channel allocation, enabling configurations such as voice/voice, voice/data, or data/data within the same channel. This flexibility makes NXDN an ideal choice for commercial, industrial, and public safety communications.

In addition to its technical capabilities, NXDN has been recognized internationally as a standard for digital radio communications. The International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunications Sector (ITU-R) accepted the NXDN Common Air Interface (CAI) as an international digital land mobile system in 2016. This recognition underscores the protocol’s robustness and reliability. NXDN’s adoption has grown significantly, with numerous radio terminals deployed worldwide. Its ability to provide encrypted transmission further enhances its appeal for secure communications. Overall, NXDN represents a significant advancement in digital radio technology, offering a highly efficient, flexible, and secure communication solution for a wide range of applications.
