(I had just moved from Hermon to Glenburn this past fall and didn't have enough nice weekends to get an antenna up before it became too cold. It'll be a spring into summer project to get back on air from my base.) When mobile, I mostly park on "Channel 19 AM" but will jump around and periodically break in on hobbiests already engaged in a conversation. If I am welcomed, great! If not, I amicably leave them alone. When shooting skip, I scan around but primarily try to make contacts on... "Channel 28 AM" and "Channel 38 LSB" General information for active channels in Maine... About Frequencies Outside Channels 1-40... Freebanding (using frequency ranges below channel 1 and above channel 40) are still a very common practice but technically illegal to use in our country. Many other countries have their own rules and regulations that differ in ranges from what we use here. Hence why you'll hear traffic outside our 26.965-27.405 range but still within the 11 meter band. I am a member of an international DX group called "Tango Mike" to which I use their assigned callsign to me (2-TM-728) if I am trying to make any contacts internationally. Visit their website at www.tangomike.net. A little walk down memory lane... To begin, I actually did not arrive at the handle "River Rat" from the well known 1973 folk-hero J.W. Edwards which is quite an interesting story to check out. (Click here for that historic story) I arrived at "River Rat" for a CB handle from a skateboarding t-shirt I had at 9 years old. My idea was simply the fact that I lived by a river and liked to scurry around. "Double R" just randomly became a nickname many CBers started calling me over time. Coming up with the unit number "728" was as simple as dialing "R,A,T" on your telephone to which you'd dial the numbers "7,2,8" to spell it out. I developed an interest in CB radio communicating in the late 80s. As ironic as it may sound, I was exposed to ham radio about a year before that, which is where I developed my first interest in 2-way radio communication. RIP Doug Manza (K1ZIL), who was also a CBer who went by "Yankee Trader", had an Italian restaurant business where the building looked like a huge piece of half cut culvert with the kitchen, bar, stools, and dine-in tables spanning along the entire right-side wall and all 2-way radio equipment spanning literally the entire opposite left-side wall. He allowed me to make a few contacts on his gear and, after that, I became mentally hooked. I was encouraged to study for my ham ticket but was too anxious to not only study out of the book but you still had to learn Morse Code back then. Due to not wanting to wait, this hesitation allowed me to discover the license free Citizens' Band. (My very first CB radio used as a base from 1987-1994) My first CB radio was a Midland Model 77-888 which, with the help of my father, hooked it up to a Micronta 2.5 amp regulated power supply on a Shakespear Super Big Stick base antenna at my parents' house in Calais, ME which is right on the international border to New Brunswick Canada and on the Eastern/Atlantic time zone line. (My 2nd CB radio base I had and used from 1994-2015) Fast forward toward 1994, and by then, I had met a vast variety of CB hobbiests on both sides of "the puddle" as we had put it back then. I then bought myself a brand new Cobra 2000GTL since it was clear my interest in the CB hobby was here to stay. We developed a local community group on channel 5 AM and it was a family-minded channel where profanity was kept to a minimal as many operators had childern in ear shot. A few of the regulars at the time were Wrong Way, Mr D, Bobcat, BG, Snowbird, Smoke Stack, Ugly Mama, Little Mac, Superman, Tippy Toes, Warlock, Green Thumb, Rub, and Smoke Screen. (Here are a few of the mobile radios I have had in my vehicles) By the late 90s, the skip was rolling in strongly day and night in the middle of the cycle which ultimately broke up the group. I still kept all my base equipment and, in the early 2000s, had moved into the Bangor area where I met quite a few die-hard local hobbiests via my still having a mobile setup at the time. The few I met were left over from their local dis-banded channel 2 AM (again from the non-stop strong skip). From the few operators I had met, we created a new group using channel 3 AM. This was also kept as a family-minded channel. A few of the regulars were Mongoose, DQ, Ridge Runner, Rebel, Buster, Tahoe, Channel Master, Snowman, and Greese Monkey. Since there was still local CB activity after moving to the Bangor area, I bought an I-MAX 2000 base antenna and hooked up my Cobra 2000GTL to have a base station setup again. Fast forward to late 2009, skip had started rolling in daily again as we were in the next cycle which broke up a good chunk of us. We were also facing the more mobile ability to contact wirelessly via cellular phones which didn't help. A few of us (including myself) decided to go for our ham/amateur radio licenses where we could continue the radio hobby elsewhere. Within the next 5-10 years, many of the CBers in the Bangor surrounding area went for theirs too. And, unfortunately, many didn't bother and were left in the skip and white noise. Some got out of radio completely and others naturally met their maker. I hung onto my I-MAX 2000 antenna, as it could be used on ham/amateur bands, but sold my Cobra 2000GTL in 2015 for a Galaxy DX-2527 which I had only possessed for no more than a few more years as CB activity in area was still on a downward trend. In late 2016, I sold my Galaxy DX- 2527 as I was fully engaged at that point with my newer ham/amateur radio hobby. A few more years later in 2019, I decided to get back into at least having a base on standby in case CB activity made a comeback. I ended up buying a Galaxy DX-2547 which is still my current base station radio for CB as of early 2021. Check out the video demo of what was done to it by clicking here!) Even though I enjoy the ham/amateur radio hobby, there is still a blip of interest and appreciation for CB radio that I still have. It's where I began. I was fortunate to have mostly grown up in the CB world away from most of the drunks and foul languaged operators that shaped me into a a much more proper ham/amateur radio operator that I am today. It does appears that the CB world is making somewhat of a comeback. I have found some new and old operators locally who I never knew before. Plus, as of this writing in early 2021, I've been here rumors here and there that CBers (outside truckers) nationwide, appear to be slowly increasing in numbers. With that said, we'll see what happens over the next few years. Even though, I'm a "hamster" on CB, I hope things do keep going in this direction as the CB radio service is also a great gateway toward developing an interest in ham/amateur radio -OR- to just stay as a more simplfied radio hobby that can still be a lot of fun.
