The ARES program is sanctioned under the ARRL or American Radio Relay League and its Emergency Coordinator or EC, which is the lead of the ARES group, and is appointed by the ARRL at the recommendation of the respective Section Leader for the EC's section. The EC is required to be a memebr of the ARRL as part of their appointment.
ARES also provides support to VOADS or Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters such as American Red Cross and Salvation Army. Operators of all license and experience levels and abilities are able to participate in ARES. Members operate in a variety of roles including deployment, home based support through the operation of nets, and other logistical needs of the program and its partners using a wide variety of tools and applications.
